May Pickups

Don't see these with real players too often. Anyone know who the catcher is?

My pre-war pickup to start the month:

Picked up 13 Topps Venezuelans from '64, '66, and '67, including one HOFer ('64 Robin Roberts):

I love that Flood!!!!! Honestly the crazy valuations and crookery related to vintage is steering me towards modern cards like that Flood...a tough...really cool card for not a lot of benjamins!!!!

I have a '64 Flood from the U.S. version and just missed out landing the Venezuelan version on Ebay a few months back. I think the '64 is the nicest pose of all of Floods Topps issues. When this one popped up I was determined to snag it. I was stunned when the I saw the final price was $9.00.

Love that Strunk! Not a bad little career, his. Seventeen seasons, four World Series titles, lifetime .284 hitter. None too shabby. Great card.

Glen, here's a list of all the catchers who played for L.A. and Portland in 1937, perhaps it's one of them:

L.A. Angels - Bob Collins, Glyn Gibson

Portland Beavers - Bill Cronin, Mike Tresh, William Wilson

I don't know if I'll stick it out with this set or just enjoy this HOFer at a reasonable cost. But who am I kidding? I've got the ball rolling on the E93's. No version of true mental health is gonna stop my twisted brain now!

Yeah, the Lajoie is clearly trimmed, but I just love the battered look of it. And my pondering on whether to keep going with this set didn't take long to resolve itself, as the cards above clearly demonstrate. I'm gonna keep the grade standard pretty low, though. Otherwise this set's just too pricy.

i love the e93s, as it was the first caramel set i completed. the leach and pastorius are nice, you can probably find a presentable 1 lajoie for around $150. wait it out i'm sure you'll be upgrading.

fantastic set cy young batting waddell unique pose bender collins plank in their red/brown uniform you can't beat it! i will remember this set fondly.

Glen, very nice die-cut Uhle. I have never seen one cut from the sheet like that. I would say it's from 1921 though, not 1923. If you have any more info on it, I'd love to hear.

I just got the die-cut from Eric E. He picked up a few of them a number of years ago. Maybe he has more info, or would be willing to sell one of his others.

Granted, we've got two pitchers, backed by two second basemen and five outfielders. But there are two Hall of Famer's on board. I think we can take the Astros in a seven-game series!
