t206 plank PSA Authentic---24.7k

ok so this card brings that whole argument of awesome AUT card with eye-appeal vs crappy 1s that's unaltered and which you prefer...imo that's a pretty hefty price to pay for an AUT card. i don't think the buyer is looking to profit off the card, as it'll never (never say never?) get into a numbered holder, so he must love its presentation. i know for a fact you could get the sgc20 that's been sitting on ebay for cheaper, and for me i'd rather have the original vs the mummified version. to me it looks TOO nice and haunting in a way, like a dead corpse with make-up on.
i guess i have no point and just amazed at the price it brought...for comparison's sake the last nice psa1 sold in rea for 21k and the last psa2 sold in sotheby's for 25k. the sgc20 can be had for around 24k, but that's before the AUT pricing.

If PSA/SGC 1 poor level cards sells for the same as an authentic card, that is an interesting choice to make. In general, I am not fond of altered cards, but even a 1 level card should have some eye appeal.
Hypothetically, given the choice below, I would choose the PSA Authentic card over the beat up SGC card.

I'll take the Carter card. I think having a card with a pedigree is cool

Quan, I like your "dead corpse with make-up on" metaphor. That pretty much sums up how I feel about that card. It looks real nice, but up close I'm sure the alterations are detectable. While dropping 20k+ on any card is out of the question for me, if I could it certainly wouldn't be on that one. I'd love to own a t206 Plank, just not THAT Plank. Just wouldn't feel comfortable about it given the extent of the alterations. If it had only been trimmed or possibly touched up a bit, that's a different story.
Quan...
I know a guy that has a PSA 5 T206 Plank, if you want to PM me i will tell you what he wants for it if you are interested ...and this is no April fools joke!!!

mark, no i am not in the market for a psa5 plank . i don't have enough resources to sink 6 figures+ into one card. besides winning the lotto there are many other cards i could have with the diff in price between an EX and a F/G.
i agree with some that i would not pay 15k+ for the Carter's example...only reason i'd pay 14k is because I think I can flip it for a profit. I'm still in the market for a nice 1 to go into my collection.

personally...I thought the price of the card was reasonable. i DO agree that plank looks like a corpse...definitely creepy. i...like jay...would take the carter plank. i like that it looks like someone crumpled it up into a ball and then unraveled it!

I would take the Carter Plank as well for my choice between the two.

Like the other Minnesotans I would take the 10; knowing all the work that has been done to the AUTH it almost feels like a reprint. I would take a nice looking trimmed Plank over a 10...I guess the Harris card would work?

are we sure that card was actually sold? The bidding history of the winning bidder doesn't fit with a 20K purchase.

I would take the SGC10 Plank also. I like beaters for one thing, but when looking to add a card of this importance to my collection (i'm almost laughing at the thought since it's soooooo far from reality) I would want an unaltered example, even if it looked like that.

Count me on Wesleys side with this one.
If the PSA card has only been deemed authentic because of a trim or it measures short to factory standards then I would have no problem taking the PSA card over the SGC card as I'm not as fond of cards with creases or wrinkles that go across the players image.
IMO, trimmed/short cards are not such a big deal in my book because of the fact that many old time collectors trimmed cards to fit album pages/etc and we also find factory short cards with many issues.
Now, if you told me that the PSA card was recolored and/or had some other work done to it then I might reconsider.

Edited to add that I didn't bother looking at the eBay auction until now and was just going on the scans posted above.
That being said, I think I'd still take the PSA card but would like to find out more details about the restoration work that was done and exactly what part(s) of the card were enhanced.
