"Outing" an auction: opinion on sgc20 t206 plank
ok guys...need ur opinions...gut feel how much would you pay? i have all the vcp data but i want to hear some normal human opinions. probably a moot point anyways as i have a feeling another dealer will swoop in. i just saw the listing today so i don't have back scan yet.

Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
No worries about 'outing' auctions here, Quan. I'm not sure it's even possible to 'out' an auction of that magnitude in the first place.
Don't think I'll be of much help to you with the price, but would you mind sharing past auction results with us here? I'm guessing its market value is approximately 2/3 of the BIN price...tops. As for the card itself, it looks pretty good overall but would you be able to live with the crease through the face? Could be a distraction for some. Then again if you want a better looking one, the cost is going to multiply. You've saved up for the Plank for a while now, so if this is the one that "speaks" to you, then by all means go for it!
Good luck man.

I would guess...
around $22,000. Grab if you can Quan. I think the seller is looking for $27,000-$28,000 so he may not take anything lower. I think the card has potential to rise 30-40% in the next few years. Once the 100 year anniversary comes and the hype starts again you will see values of rare T206 cards go way up.

hehe yea ben that outing thing is a joke on how everyone is so hush hush on the other board.
vcp info:
psa A 15.5k 4/29/07 mastro
psa 1 21.2k 4/29/07 rea
psa 2 25k 9/14/07 scp
sgc 1 16.4k 4/29/07 mastro
sgc 2 35.2k 4/29/07 rea
so the 4 planks going off the same time last year help each other out...and the market was very strong also. i don't remember the psa2 in scp late last year...meh. ben/mark 20-22k would be fair i'd say but like mark say they might want too much. i might just wait until maybe they put it in their auction.

I've never followed T206 Plank prices too closely, but those figures seem much higher than they were even just a few years ago. Too bad Julie didn't hang on to hers, she had a very nice looking psa 2 which she bought from Mark Macrae (and cracked out). I think in the end it was sold 4-5 years ago in the 11k range or even a bit less.
Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
Quan, sometimes Planks with a SC 350 back tend to sell for a "tad" more, b/c they are so fewer in number. Personally, if I wanted this card, my max would be around $22.5k.

thanks scott i'm searching and reading the 2 diff backs and how one has nicer focus and registry than the other etc. the crease through the face would bother jay alot but i'm kinda indifferent to it...better than half the back missing with paper loss (per the paper loss/heavy crease question ben proposed).

You could possibly get a bit better deal when the auction ends; they would be saving some eBay fees and if you pay with a cashiers check they would probably save around $2k in fees.
The SGC 10 was from the Lionel Carter Collectionand sold for around $14k, and was a real beater.
I agree with Scott and Mark that $20k - $23k would be fair.
Good Luck!

I'm not a fan of creases in the face, but that one isn't very distracting. It's heavy creases that bother me most as they tend to mar the picture. I've always loved the Plank portrait and parting with my e95 will be tough, but the CJ Plank is nice looking too and it has a bio on the back.

Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
no soup for me guys. to me it looks like a glorified p/f card...basically a weak 20 but the seller wanted STRONG 20 borderline 30/2 pricing for it...meh. the psa1 rea had last year looked alot nicer at 21.5k so i'm thinking with the economy slowing down maybe i could save and pick one up this year for cheaper.
thanks for all the help...and also the SC350 back don't have that strong image like the 150 series.

Weird, i don't remember the one in SCP also. I agree with everybody else regarding pricing, but personally I would want a 150 series Plank, the image is sooo much clearer, not milky like the 350. Maybe a bunch will come out at the same time again, so we both can get one.

I sold my PSA 1 for $13K in Cleveland last summer and felt guilty sleeping that night.

Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
Actually the 350 series subjects are easier to find IMO. There have been only a handful 150 subjects Planks up for grabs over the past 4-6 years, only been 1-2 perhaps 3 for sale counting the one with washed out color below which came from Halper’s collection. Also the no color Plank next to the Halper washed out card was a Piedmont backed card for what that's worth.
It is true that the 150 subjects Plank’s tend to have a better image less fuzzy and more in focus, you’ll also notice that the blue background tends to be more pastel and less pixilated in the 150 series, and the 350 series tend to have a more indigo blue quality. Who knows perhaps they did were out the plate after all…LOL
Below are images of the last Planks offered over the past handful of years say 4-7 or so, let me know if you need pricing Quan. As a fellow shopper for a Plank (PSA3-4 range) this year I think the one above is a bit over priced. I also feel while it’s a cool card the L.Carter Plank that Paul bought went for way too much. I’ve followed the rarities of this set for a long time now…and low grade cards of Plank and Magie as well as Demmitt and O’Hara for that matter are all over the place, its only when you go super sharp looking 2’s and then 3 and up that they have a routine increase over the years for what that’s worth.
Meaning today’s 20k low grade Plank is tomorrow’s 14-15k low grade Plank IMO…..these really depend who’s looking and bidding etc. at the time, so if your going to hang onto it for a long time pull the trigger or if you may flip in a year or two buy it at the right price.
Good luck Quan in your search I’m pulling for ya, hope this helps.
Trimmed card now in a PSA graded 2 or 3 holder which then sold for 16k ebay.
(Dan's I think..)

Wow, is that PSA 7 short. The SGC 86 looks sweet.

Whoa, the Plank motherload! I'm feeling a little woozy after looking at all of those.
Good to see you on here, Wonka. I agree with Jay, the Harris Collection PSA 7 does look short (funky top border), but it also has the best register and color by far.
The "Mr. X" Plank has a horrible register. Ugh

Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
john when i get some free time tonight i will go over your post/scans more closely and send you an email definitely! i'm glad big t206 guys like you and elliot are going after the vg-vg/ex range. i definitely don't want to butt heads with you or elliot's deep canadian $ pockets
that l. carter card is a glorified authentic example and really skewed the whole plank pricing i think. now everybody with a marginal p/f card thinks theirs is worth 30k.

Ben, that's scaralidge. There is no such thing as a trimmed card from the Harris collection. PSA even says so

Jay I hear ya....unlike a lot of plastic tomb jockeys I know there out there (trimmed cards that is), but given the choice of that trimmed card of Plank or any of the others except the one Scott B outbid me on long ago during an SCP auction. I'll take the trimed one all day long..it looks so damn good when a card looks that good even I can close my eyes and live the lie.
Not all Harris cards are trimmed...but a good few are trimmed. A lot of the story regarding trimmed cards comes from real trimmed cards and also where the bulk of the cards came orginally before Harris obtained the collection.
Cheers, John

I wonder how many of the Harris cards came from the Copeland collection. I know a lot of cards were trimmed in late 80s for resale to Copeland.

It's my understanding from a good source that close to 200 or so cards were from Copeland's collection...which ones they were is anyones guess...

Re: Outing an auction: sgc20 t206 plank on ebay.
hey john,
good read and thanks for the info. the trimmed hunt raw example did turn out to be a psa3...you have a scan of it up. i was pretty pissed (at psa) it got into the holder but i remember it selling for 29k or so correct? i was pretty amazed. scott brockelman is of the opinion the 350 and 150 are found with equal frequency, the only difference is collectors tend to hang onto the sharp 150 while you see more 350s going up for auction.
i will be keeping the card so hopefully i will find one for a fair price...the only condition is i don't want an authentic example.

Great collection of scans. The images on the cards with 150 backs look so much sharper than the ones with the 350.
