Very cool looking CDV, Tony. Do you have any more background info about the player/piece to share? Congrats

Re: April 2008 Pickup Thread
Hi Ben -
Joseph Hornung actually had quite an extensive career in the majors including stops in Boston, Baltimore, & NY. The J.A Mann & Sons studio cdv depicts him in the international league as a young player playing for the London Ontario Tecumsehs in 1877-78. The team letter of "T" is clearly marked on his jersey on the cdv.
He does have cards issued in the N172 Old Judge set but his name is written as Horning. 3 to be exact. I think this is a remarkable piece that looks even better in person. I have included an article on Hornung and pics of his (3) N172 issued cards.
Interestingly enough, the article I found actually has this same cdv pose on the top.

Ben
I had that one on my watchlist as well and got preoccupied with something else ending at the same time.. I thought it went pretty cheap too, as is most things right now.

Dang Dave. You don't know how much fun it is watching your pick-up threads to see what's going to turn up next. Do you have any guesstimate idea as to how many cards (or mainly, different types) have gone through your hands in the past few years? I'm starting to think that may be the way to collect - short holding periods. You sure have had the opportunity to see and own a lot of different types of cards, that's for sure.

Thanks Joann
I have had quite a bit come in and out the door. Besides a select few cards I always seem to be finding something else pop up for auction and so I have to sell something else...thats the way you have to do it when you don't have a million dollars to play with like monopoly money.

Love that approach, Dave. I kinda do the same thing, but have to say that I'm a little envious of your turnover rate.
Re: April 2008 Pickup Thread
ok so my e93 half set of beaters came (thanks seth)...and i just find it funny that people would actually spend money to have these cards slabbed, like pr- cards with writing...u say uniformity, i say LOL funny!
anyways they did provide me with some stress relief as i've found out recently one of the things i enjoy most these days about the hobby is sitting down and cracking beater slabs...let your soul run free {insert the guy that's infamous for his beaters that we used to have beater war threads in honor of him whose name i'm forgetting at the moment}

Quan, you must be referring to Larry Tipton, the founding member of the long standing card trading/sharing group 'OBC'. The group is not known for being condition conscious (and that's a huge understatement). Extreme beaters became known among the group simply as "Tiptons". Here are a few Tiptons from the collection of the man himself:cccc wrote:{insert the guy that's infamous for his beaters that we used to have beater war threads in honor of him whose name i'm forgetting at the moment}

Re: April 2008 Pickup Thread

Picked up this Sweeney the other day and while not exciting to most I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had a SC 350-460 Factory 42 back and when I added it to my spreadsheet I found that it was my first card with this back out of the 235 I have.
Does it carry a small premium? The listing didn't have a back scan so I paid about going rate for a 40.
Best,
Scott

I was very excited to pick up this J=K candy card a few days ago. I was even more surprised by its size once I got it in the mail; it dwarfs the average "T" and "E" card.

Great pickup Zach!
Glad to see you back and doing what you do - that is, picking up nice scarce cards for your collection.
Hope to see you around.

Re: April 2008 Pickup Thread
The SC 460 42, do not command a premium. They are advertised alot as a premium but really nothing tough about them. I would say they are probably thesecond toughest of the SC's behind the 460 25s.
