Tango Eggs
I sent this population report to Eric Merka, as he is actively searching for a Tango Eggs card for his type collection. I thought I would share this with the board, as I tend to forget about how rare some of the cards are. The recent Morgan on eBay went for close to $5k and I was a bit surprised, as I thought it was one of the cards where around 8 examples are known. I then referred myself to this population report and realized the price tag was actually a STEAL, as there is only one example of the Tango Morgan in existence!
Thanks to REA for the population report! As always, Rob Lifson is a class act and is always willing to help collectors out. Rob's attitude towards collectors and love for the Hobby is always refreshing in this world of auction houses simply worrying about the bottom line. I hope to meet Rob Lifson at the Reading Show as well, should I be able to attend. That alone, would be worth the trip for my family and myself!

Thanks again Scott!
It's great to see a list from the actual source, instead of the other one (you know what I'm talking about)
I was actually bidding on that Morgan, though I didn't know how rare it was. I thought I had it won in the last 30 seconds because I entered a bid of $900 for it with my snipe program. Then in the span of about 15 seconds it went from $575 to over $4000. I was crushed. But now I see why, and someone knew it.

Here's the Morgan that Scott was talking about. It's actually a picture of Doolin. One of 4 mix and matches from the set.
I'll hopefully be picking one up in a week or so. I'll post it if/when I get it.

A lot of these Tangos actually show pics of other players - the Felsch shows Demmitt I believe, the Meyer shows Jacklitsch and the Morgan shows Doolan

I think there's 4 total switcharoos in the set.
Edited to add: "The Happy Felsch card doesn't picture Mr. Felsch; instead, there's a
portrait of Ray Demmitt. Buck Weaver's card actually pictures Joe
Tinker of the Hall of Fame trio of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance. Ray
Morgan has a card, but it's Mike Doolan who's pictured. Billy Meyer's
card features a picture of none other than Fred Jacklitsch."

Re: Tango Eggs
I was the underbidder on the Morgan. I thought at $4600 and change I'd have it, but the guy that ended up winning it contacted me that day and was going for it as well, and I guess he just wanted it more. It's been 6 years since I've picked up a new one I didn't have (I've got 9 different), and it may be twice that long before I see another I need.
Here's a few scans since someone had asked:

Just trying to keep up with Q's various screen names seems like a full time job!Sometimes I'm a backbone collector, sometimes an armpit I guess.I sent a few cards in once to be reholdered in a fitted holder, they just sent them back to me the same way they were submitted. After PSA's latest debacle not sure I'll be submitting anything anymore

sorry T my hope in creating all these obscure ids is one day i'd forget them and can't log in thus weaning myself from these chatboards.
...kinda like the HP show nowadays. i didn't even realize another one was coming this weekend until i read the post on cu. 5-6 years back i couldn't wait to go...even TIK showed up one time wowow! those were the days.
and yes psa has lost me with the half grade bs. they're no longer the top dog at anything and they're getting desperate.
to bring the thread back on topic i've always thought the tangos are like the e106s (kinda like e104-1 ops/d359s/t208s)...do they also have that same front gloss that are prone to cracking? my guess is no as you alway see them in 7s-8s...

Q - I've never owned a tango, but they look darker than the 1910's e sets and more like the run from the 1915-16s: e106, d303, t216

yes rman, i was using the e104 etc as an example. is the paper stock on the tango sturdy like t cards or kinda loose/fragile like the e's?

why 1916?
Can anyone tell me why this set is dated at 1916? Just curious. BTW, add another switcheroo--the photo of Murphy is of Danny, but the card is likely intended to be that of Eddie, as it says Chicago Am., a team for which Danny never played--in fact, he did not play at all after 1915--but for which Eddie played.

Re: Tango Eggs
Without checking my almanac, I would assume the Tango set's date came from the palyers and team changes. As was discussed above (Tinker/Weaver etc.), quite a few of the pictures are of players other than the ones pictured. I am assuming (again, without looking at an almanac for specific dates/players) that these changes reflect the 1916 season.

Re: Tango Eggs
I was looking at the past results of the REA auction back in April 2007 and came across the Tango Eggs Lot that was sold there. They also display the letter that tells numbers of each card from the "find".
The Morgan is said to be a 1 of 1, but there may be two.
The one from the REA auction is a PSA 6
http://bid.robertedwardauctions.com/bidplace.aspx?itemid=8520
The one that ended on Ebay a week ago is an SGC 50.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250199484321&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=015
That is unless the PSA 6 was cracked and submitted to SGC and received a lower grade? Any thought?

It does appear to be the same card. They both seem to have the same width borders with a very slight diamond cut.

Re: Tango Eggs
Is there a way to know when a card was submitted to SGC for grading?
That would suck to get a 2 grade bump down just for the submission. Ouch.
I emailed the seller of the card on ebay and asked these 3 questions:
How long have you owned the card?
Did you submit it to SGC for grading and if so, when was it?
Was this card crossed over from PSA to SGC?

Re: Tango Eggs
Eric, I also noticed this card of Morgan, in addition to the example auctioned off by REA. I do know there were a very small handful of Tangos around before this find. And, with Lipset being the auctioneer, it stands to reason he could have had this one for several years - even before the huge find. Or, he could have had a deal with the family where he bought some cards and didn't want anyone knowing about them (from the Tango find), thus the family didn't list them in the pop report. This would also be a viable conclusion, as the T207 Red Cross I acquired from Lipset several years back came from the find of four we all know about (it seems that when a "Find" came up, Lipset always seemed to acquire a card or two).
One can only wonder where this card of Morgan came from. I guess only Lipset knows (if he still remembers - afterall, he has owned tens of thousands of cards over the years).
