As for strategies
I think you work with what you got. Drafting where I did, I had no shot at certain guys, and yet those with the first three picks had no shot at getting one of the studliest pitchers once their opening picks were spent. I believe Lee is following a similar strategy as Dan, and I thought about it too with Hornsby available. I think Banks went a little too high, but I can understand the decision completely--he was never going to be available by Lee's third pick-- I can promise you that , so if you want him, you pull the trigger. I was in the same boat with Collins and Lajoie, who I really like, and who I had no chance to get once I picked Grove, but no way I'm letting Lefty Grove get by me--I really thought Lee would take him and Hornsby, making me the one to stew over whether I should take Ernie.
So you hope guys drop, but with the snake draft as it is, you're looking at twenty guys being selected after you make yours, so that's a heck of a drop you're hopin for. As those who have been in these formats know, you can see runs on certain positions as people try and get their (insert difficult position here) before they're all gone, yet you still have to ask yourself--is the difference between the third and eighth best catchers drastic enough where I want to get mine now and forego some other all around stud horse player? BTW, I think 3rd base is a little thin myself, what with Schmidt, Brett and ARod gone. Are we allowed to steer and jeer in this thread?

Arod is far from overrated. He gets blasted for not doing well in the post season, but many other great players have sucked at that time of year too. His numbers are as good or better than SS or 3B to ever play the game. He's still be at SS if he weren't on the Yankees

Not to be random but it has been 12 hours since Ben has picked. Do we skip over the-illini?

Agreed. Chris' time has elapsed, but since most of that time he spent sleeping, it would be fair to give him an short extension. Chris will be on well before noon.
On a side note, I think the best values in the draft so far have been OFers. Mays, Aaron, Mantle, and Dimaggio all went much later than I thought they would.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Outfielders like Pitchers are the deepest position and since all outfielders are available for all OF positions there's no need to rush on them....but of course you can't just let Aaron, Mays, Mantle and DiMaggio sit around either.
I don't want to sound like a newbie here, but I don't know everone's name in this league - who are Orioles1954? and arandy?

yes....
that would be a good idea to have a list of everyones name, Ben would know better than i. Maybe in our Team Roster we can put "Owner" next to manager and insert our name.

My real name is Randy. What is yours? I'm also bad at names. Mark has a good idea.

My name is Dan Bretta - Maybe we should put our names up if not everyone knows who we're conversing with.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Sorry about the time elapsed guys - I was out to dinner with the better half then went straight to bed - I picked Wee Willie Keeler in round 4.
I am pretty pleased with how my team is turning out. I was able to land 3 of the top 15 players of all time according to SABR - not too shabby!
Chris

Gil just picked John Mcgraw as a player but James (orioles1954) used him as a manager. Is that allowed?

I don't see why not. The manager thing is just for fun anyway.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Are we going to give Randy until noon as well? I PMed him last name around 8:30.

Probably should out of fairness. Maybe starting next round we'll abide to the 12 hr max more strictly, as it's getting later in the draft now and things seem to be slowing down.
edited to say: it's nearly noon now and still no pick from Randy. Jerry, feel free to go ahead with your pick now. Randy can make up his pick whenever he has a chance.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
I appologize. I have been out all day. I'll have Johnny Evers for round 7.

What I'd like to see
Is at the conclusion of these sincere efforts to assemble the best possible teams, we throw all of the players out, and begin again. That is, every player selected during this phase of the selections is eliminated from being a candidate, and new teams are configured based on whatever players haden't been picked.
I certainly do not think I would fare any better in this than anyone else, but doing a sim on the resultant teams would be a indication of who really knows the players. Or who has/uses the best research sources.

Interesting idea Gil but I think most of us would like to see how the best vs. the best matchups would have played out. Also keep in mind that there is still plenty of draft left to complete. The player pool will be much thinner in later rounds, especially once we expand the draft to reflect the roster positions in the sim. We likely still have 13 more rounds to go! So everyone's knowledge and research sources will surely play a larger role as we move along in the draft.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
I don't need no steenken 13 more rounds.
A few pitchers who hurl 60+ CG per season, and I'm ready to play.
Really tho, Ben - are you going to be able to maintain interest through 13 more rounds?
How about picking the pace up a bit?
Such as select multiple players each turn after round 12, etc.?
