Re: Draft Discussion 2008
The beauty of the sim is that there are several ways to run it. This time around I will do one run with default manager settings and one with custom manager setting with anyone posts them.
Given that the whole season is computered generated, I could literally run a 100 seasons in no time (I have a stupid fast machine with a 2gig QuadCore with 4gig of RAM)
I think 16 teams would be ideal next time around. That way we can break it into two 8 team leagues and then have a championship game.
As Ben pointed out, for an online, email type draft, this isn't taking very long at all.
Sounds like double picks is winner after round 16.

Count me out.
Jerry, I think we've thrown out the autopick idea so no worries about that.
Starting rd 17 I think we'll do double picks. Meaning you take two players each time it's your turn. That satisfies the concern of speeding up the draft while avoiding getting players we dont want on our teams.

This is off topic, but I'm so happy that I got my Tinker, Evers, and Chance trio!

Right, for a short while he did (under 500 innings). Keep in mind his negro league stats wouldn't count in the sim.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
the minimum requirements for a player to make the sim works out to about a 9-10 year career

I recall Chris telling me he'd be on vacation in Mexico this week. So I'm not sure if he's going to be able to pick. I have a pretty good idea of who he wants at this pick though, maybe I should just go ahead and pick for him
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
If he is gone, that might be the best ting to do. After that, I can set him up to have the computer do his picks

Dan, you are a bad man. You drafted the two players (Sam Thompson and Dazzy Vance) that I would have drafted had they made it to me.

since we're drafting 24 rounds
can we pick another player at an already filled position now, or do we have to fill out our 16 man roster first? If we're picking 2 at a time (did we decide for sure on that?) after round 16, then I have no chance at my spot to get a particular guy I would want on my bench unless I can pick him "early".

actually
now that I think of it, it doesn't really amtter for me, since I can always plant my pick at utility until later. Still, it would be nice to have an answer--thanks

Todd, you can pick any position you'd like right now. I've already added the extra spots to my roster. I suggest everyone does the same. That way you can start filling up your bench now if you'd like, or if you'd prefer to fill up the extra pitching slots now, you can do that too. I posted an example of a 24 man roster in a thread not too far down the page. As you pointed out, any already filled position that you pick just goes to your bench.
PS - Snider was already selected with the first pick of this round, Todd. Gonna have to change that one
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Since my starters consistantlty log 300-400 innings can I trade my last RP for another position? I will have the quickest games in the league since there will be few pitching changes.

Sure Lee. You can sub out a RP spot for an extra bench hitter or SP if you like.
Take a look at the first post on the team rosters thread. It's got an example of the expanded 24 player roster that we'll be using, so you can edit your roster so that it looks like that. If you'd like to tweak it so that you have a deeper bench, that's fine - just make sure your roster adds up to 24 players. The additions made were: + 1 C, +5 BN (bench spots for hitters), + 1 SP, +1 RP
Starting in round 17 we'll be doing double picks. Each team will select two players instead of just one when it's their turn.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Just a heads up, Lee's 15th round pick Ichiro isn't in the sim (less than 10 years experience) so he's been substituted with the next guy on Lee's list, JIMMY COLLINS.
Re: Draft Discussion 2008
Have the computer pick twelve teams on its own.
Auction each team off.
Put the auction proceeds in the kitty.
Whoever wins the season, wins the kitty (or split it among the top three teams).
No trading players, nor selling them.

Sim Question
Are there injuries with the SIM? Is the designated hitter rule in effect? If not, what is the role of a starting utility player?

there is a vote at the link below to allow or not allow a DH , i voted a few weeks ago to allow DH. Right now it looks as if 5 of the 10 teams voted. I believe we are going by the majority vote so if you did not cast yet please do. link is below.

Re: Draft Discussion 2008
If anyone's not going to be around tonight just pm me your picks. Would be nice to finish the draft tonight and get some sim games going.
About the sim...
Might be nice to sim games a few weeks at a time so we could have stats/standings updates, option to edit starting lineup/batting order, and maybe a free agent pickup every once in a while. Thoughts?

Re: Draft Discussion 2008
There are injuries in the sim. The computer manager will substitute the best player for the position.
The first pass, I am just going to run the season with default manager settings. Second pass, I will input the everyone's manager settings if they have posted them or PM'd them to me. I can do a third pass where we do a week or two of games at a time. That should have any bugs worked out and we can see how much the computer manager settings make a difference and how much of a difference micromanaging teams will make.

Re: Draft Discussion 2008
I'd like to input more detailed instructions on how to manage the team, in addition to the general guidelines previously input. Is this possible?

a little help please
Jay, I'll go through the rules again, but thought you could save me some time. As I understand it, the computer will play all the games in a matter of minutes or hours and tell us final standings--and I guess it can provide us scores of each game so we know how we did head to head. We really don't manage at all on the first pass, right?
As for our manager settings, will I be able to create lefty-lefty matchups, use pinch runners, call pitchouts or any such? In addition to day-by-day stuff, suppose after a quarter of the season I see where my #4 starter is completely ineffective, can I replace him in the rotation? Can I have a player scheduled to play every fourth game, for example Piazza catches Newhauser? Can I platoon? Would I be able to find all these answers by reading your prior posts?

The manager setting will allow you do to a lot of that. If you have a platoon set up, I believe it is set so you can do it for lefty-lefty match ups, etc. As far as I know, there is no way to set up having a certain catcher catch a certain pitcher. If we played game by game, then each manager could set rosters accordingly. A lot of other questions can be answered in the post about how the sim runs.
Managing geme-to-game could be tough as it would require everyone posting starters each day and with even a 154 game schedule, it would take a year or more play out a season even though the computer can complete a game in minutes.
When I have a the computer play out the season, I get a full of set of stats and box scores, if I want them. Genereating box scores eats up a huge amount of processing resources, so I won't be doing it this time around. There will be a full set of season totals and league leaders.
