Re: September 2013 Pickups
I got a little crazy last night. Saw that a raw one of these sold for $380 a couple months ago, so I think I got a relative bargain on this one at $460 graded gem mint. But will he develop? God knows, but the Rangers paid $4.5mn for him, so he must be pretty talented. Heard that a lot of teams wanted him, but he is very tall. Could be the next Tony Clark... or the next Juan Gonzales. We'll see.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
You are obviously just jealous of my Jairo Beras. All of your cards are just turds like those ugly-assed Dots Miller cards and the grainy photo of Babe Ruth. You wish you could have a sick-assed refractor (Orange!) of Jairo Beras cuz he's gonna hit 45-50 a year and then you will be drooooooooling all over that card!!!!ullmandds wrote:OMG?!?!?!? Actually, he's 6'6"... so I think very similar to Dave Winfield. Huge power, big arm, decent speed.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
Here is a Youtube clip of Jairo killing the ball:
Man, he hit that thing so hard, you can't even see it when it leaves the bat... it is gone. Long gone. Out of the ballpark, out of the country, even. It departed from the Dominican Republic and landed somewhere in Miami. That ball is going to be cited as an illegal immigrant, man. It was hit so hard that it's gonna be looking for health insurance.
And did you hear the sound it made when it left the bat? That was not the crack of the bat, man, that was a sonic BOOM. That sound started a small earthquake over in Haiti. So now you know what Jairo's bringin to the party, man. Hey! Nolan Ryan ain't stupid, is he? He rubber-stamped this, 4.5 million bucks - that's not cheap for a 17 year-old kid. So watch and be astounded!!!

I don't actually do twitter, but it is a twitter pic. It was posted on a scouting blog I read of Beras. Tbh, this whoooole thing is crazy; I can't even believe I bought the card!

modern market is alot of speculating and prospecting, not really collecting. players can go up or down 50% within a week depending on how they play or draft position.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
That's my theory. 99% of them will be practically worthless in ten-fifteen years. But Beras doesn't need to actually become a HOFer for the price to go up. As long as he dominates A+ ball, he should be okay. Look at Byron Buxton. #1 prospect in America, his cards sell for 1/3 the price of Trout, but the odds of him really being the next Trout are about 1 in 10.cccc wrote:modern market is alot of speculating and prospecting, not really collecting. players can go up or down 50% within a week depending on how they play or draft position.

So as long as Beras can dominate A ball, I should be okay, as there will then be a fresh round of speculators to grab the card back, maybe at a higher price. He batted .250 in 17 games in rookie league, which is why the price took a hit, but those stats are meaningless. We'll see...

P.S. Here's my take on Wil Myers - looks like the next Jay Buhner. That's far from an insult, actually. Buhner was very good. But the killer with Myers is that he moved from catcher. If he had stayed, he could have been a superstar. But I don't see it as a RFer. Doesn't have quite the explosiveness of a guy like Puig. Hope he has a great playoffs, though. Good luck.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
he's a little "old" in the prospect sense at 22. yes would've been more valuable as a catcher, but he plays in tampa bay so it doesn't matter anyway as no one will know who he is. that's kinda the case with buxton also, he's all the way in minny so only the diehard will know who he is even if he breaks out....whereas marginal prospects in boston or new york would get more hype. i'm just waiting for myers to win ROY before dumping his cards.jbonie wrote:P.S. living in la i'm not impressed with puig. his attitude is his achilles heel right now, doesn't take to instructions very well. he crushes 1st pitch fastballs but the league will adjust. i could be wrong as he hardly played ball the last year+ then just exploded this year, that has to count for smoething.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
I like Puig a lot. I think he's got a confident attitude. He is very expressive, which is partly a product of his culture. Reminds me a lot of Sammy Sosa. I don't think he'll be brought down by off-the-field struggles or lose his focus on the field. But it could be choppy for a while until he learns to be patient. Think Alphonso Soriano.
Just read up on Bogaerts. People are saying he'll have to move to 3B. To me, that puts the kibosh on Bogaerts. Same problem for Miguel Sano, whom I bet will have to move to first. Safest investment out there is probably Mike Trout.
Where do you stand on regular vs. blue vs. gold vs. orange refractors?

Re: September 2013 Pickups
sano has big power, but i think he has trouble making contact...so his ceiling is lower than buxton. i like bogaerts build, thought the sox should give him the SS job next year but stephen drew has really come on strong the last couple months so they might resign him. the will middlebrooks experiment should be over.
i buy the bigger sure guys so those "rainbow" colors cost too much for me. obviously as you more to the "rarer" territory the demand will be less. i stay with the base chrome or refractor. of course if your guy hits it big or just make top prospect list that hype should be enough to drive up the value.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
Bogaerts has huge hips. You're right, he's got a great physique to add power. And major media market. One thing you could do is see whether Stephen Drew gets resigned, then sell if he does, hold if not. Drew has a major defensive advantage over Bogie, so the Sox may be reticent to downgrade.cccc wrote:sano has big power, but i think he has trouble making contact...so his ceiling is lower than buxton. i like bogaerts build, thought the sox should give him the SS job next year but stephen drew has really come on strong the last couple months so they might resign him. the will middlebrooks experiment should be over.
