Right on Pete! Glad you got that one.
Very, very rare even by obscure strip card standards.

I tell you, I'd pay real money for that sweater, even a replica.Z-NUT wrote:Thanks Chris. I don't normally go after photos, but I decided to do a search for Bains as I had owned one in the past and up popped this one. I think I lucked out as I honestly thought it would go for much more.

Pete has a big mouth... I told him not to tell anyone I was writing a book and then he went and blabbed it all over Net54. Cannot be trusted with a secret!

It must have been one too many brewskis at the Haufbrauhaus. Anyways, I sort of figured you had forgotten, so I'm not angry. Plus, I ALSO have a big mouth...

postcards and photos
A couple of interesting ones, along with some unidentified African American baseball photos from a photo album of Atlanta material. For much more, navigate around http://www.sportingoregon.com/
(1) 1908-09 Rose Company postcard of Eddie Grant with rare overprinted ad on the reverse. Eddie was a Harvard graduate, major league baseball player, lawyer, enlistee in the Army to fight in World War I, and a war hero who was killed in action.
(2) OK, so the second one isn't baseball, but it's cool. Postmarked 1909.
(3) Anyone recognize the place or uniforms in the photos of African American baseball? My guess is a local Atlanta college, maybe Morehouse or Morris Brown, because the Atlanta Black Crackers played there whenever the Atlanta Crackers were at Ponce de Leon Park. I emphasize "guess." Any more info?

Re: September 2013 Pickups
Hit me!... Busted.
I'd stay on (SGC) 20, Jamie. They should've given that a "21" just for kicks. Another high contrast N172. Very nice.
Think I may have stumbled onto a way for TPG's to make more money. Got a VG Jackie Robinson, give the TPG an extra $5 to post the grade as "42". Man, what a can of worms that would open, especially for Gretzky cards.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
Thanks Ty!
I think I've gone over... at least as far as my card budget.
I find this card a bit odd because the rectangle is boring in on his head. That is bad feng shui. In feng shui, a corner like that would be called a "poison arrow".
In spite of the bad feng shui, I'm still happy with this card. It is pretty tough to get ahold of, and quite nice image, yes. If the card is a 21, then it's an image that goes to eleven.
So we've got Black Jack, feng shui and Spinal Tap all in the same post.

Western gambling, eastern philosophy, and something entirely different. In the immortal words of Mick Shrimpton, "As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll!"jbonie wrote:Thanks Ty!

Re: September 2013 Pickups
I also want to say to bbpostcards that the Sioux soccer card is awesome. You can tell they are actually a soccer team from their shinpads - of course it is called "football" in most parts. The striped jerseys are cool and so is the ball.
My favorite team (Fulham FC) is sucking, so it's just nice to see anything soccer oriented that's uplifting. Watched Fulham lay an egg today vs. Chelsea, all I can say is that isn't anything you'd wish on your greatest enemy. Truly torture to watch them this year so far. But it's early.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
On second thought, I am not sure it's soccer - the ball looks mildly oblong. I can't tell. Can anyone tell whether it's football or soccer? I thought the guy on the right was wearing shinpads but maybe they are just very thick socks???

Jamie,
Stop buying N172s where you can clearly see who the player is.
It takes away from the rampant speculation and the mystery.

Re: September 2013 Pickups
Thanks Jay.
Back in those days, there were no subs - a "football" team comprised of eleven men, that was it. If someone got injured, they stayed on the field and were generally ignored by the opposition. This led to the injured player rather often scoring a goal. If I am correct, that meant that the injured player was often considered a sort of good-luck charm.
The uniforms are very prototypical for a soccer team. In fact, Fulham had a similar black-and-white getup (coincidentally, the colors varied by team). But Fulhams socks had the black and white stripes back then, their shorts were black and the tops white. So very similar, just different articles of clothing with each color/pattern.
Obviously, the postcard is short a couple of players, as it requires eleven to field a team, and one guy must have been the coach and the other the mascot. Awesome postcard, though. That is one of the coolest postcards I have ever seen. Though PC's are not a major focus for me...
