the BOM is the best and toughest pickup. Just can't get over how nice the condition is. toughest card in great condition-doesn't get ant better than that.

Babe Ruth w514
Just got my second Ruth... Ok, I know avid collectors despise strip cards, sometimes with good reason. Grading being a major issue. But I found this Babe Ruth w514 after Quan had posted vs. numerically graded strip cards. Bob, I mention you out of great respect . I needed the Ruth for my set and saw this one (see SGC set below)... and think SGC NAILED IT! It is a nice card, but faded, and when compared to the others scanned, gives us a good cross-section of SGC w514 grades. A difficult task.

nice card Val
That's only the fourth Leader Theatre card I think I've ever seen--and autographed no less. Nicely played, Val, a true scarcity.

re Leader Theatre cards
Hi Todd - Thanks for the kind comments. There was a small find of these back about 2004-2005. It was reported in the SCD, but I can't seem to find the article that I'm sure I saved. Going from memory (which often fails me), the find was roughly a dozen cards, all or mostly Senators, and all or most all autographed. I was the underbidder on eBay in 2006 for this Rice card (and the Leader Theatre-WaJo as well), which helps explain why I am so thrilled to now acquire it. I also have the Leader Theatre-Peckinpaugh card, which I got in an auction in 2008. BTW, the Leader Theatre-Goslin is currently available on eBay, and it is in a bit nicer condition than the Rice. FYI, this Leader Theatre was located in Washington, DC (there are/were theatres in other cities with this name), and when I was a little kid, Dad would take me to see western movies at theatres in this part of DC; I don't remember a theatre by this name, but it may have been renamed by the 1950s. Here is a link to a photo of the Leader Theatre taken around the time these cards were issued: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasonepowell/4383271197/
In addition to these W573 cards, Leader Theatre advertisements have also been found on the backs of W575-1 cards; these cards are also very scarce, and I'm still looking for one of these for my type collection.
Best, Val
3/31/11 Update: I just came across (while searching for something else) the March 2, 2001, Standard Catalog Update by Bob Lemke in which Bob describes the find of the heretofore unknown W573 Leader Theatre cards. There were 11 Leader Theatre cards, all Wash. Senators, in a collection of 50 vintage cards owned by a Missouri lady who said the cards were given to her sister in Minnesota by the mother of Twins former owner Calvin Griffith. The 11 Senators are H. Courtney, E. Gharrity, S. Harris, G. Mogridge, C. Milan, V. Picinich, T. Phillips, R. Peckinpaugh, S. Rice, H. Shanks, and T. Zachary. There is no mention of these cards being autographed, nor does it appear that the Picinich card pictured in this SCD article is autographed. The other Senators in the W573 set that were not included in this find are G. Goslin, W. Johnson, J. Judge, and E. Smith.
The W573 Leader Theatre cards auctioned on eBay in 2006 are all autographed - G. Goslin, W. Johnson, R. Peckinpaugh, and S. Rice - there may have been a couple of others that I didn't track. The eBay seller informed me via an email in 2006 that he "purchased all the cards from one gentleman here in Cincinnati. He could not remember how he got them." So, I guess these cards were a separate find from the 2001 find.
I apologize for the misinformation in my original post. I must learn to realize that I can't rely on my memory!

Johnny Crab, love that card of Evers Stealing Home. It really captures the game in that era for me.

Nice pickups Val!
I remember the ebay auctions you refer to - I was the underbidder on a couple of the others (Dan M. just smoked me!) - if I remember correctly they were listed incorrectly, but they sure didn't sell at bargain prices..

Hi Lee - Unfortunately, the Leader Theatre and the adjoining fancy buildings are no longer standing - they have been replaced by mundane office buildings. If you click on the link in my earlier post, you will see a pic of these fancy buildings superimposed on a pic of the buildings that are currently there.
Hi Todd - Thanks for showing the additional pics of the Leader Theatre and the pic of your W575-1 Leader Theatre card, which I now desire to have even more than your Indy Brewing-Ainsmith card! How many of my Indy's will it cost me to get you to part with Mr. Shea?!?
Best,
Val
