Collecting Aspirations for 2011
I've been working for a basic type run e90-1-e107 and a tobacco run t200-t217 for a long time now. I'm going for a master set with all back variations and all available background colors in sets such as e98, e94. I've been lazily working on this since the late eighties! With the poor economy...and falling prices I've added a few more this year...including these t216's.
I'm hoping to slowly inch closer to my ultimate goal...but I fear a t215 pirate may be unobtainable!
What are some of your goals for 2011?[img][/img]
By the way...this is what I need:
-e92 crofts candy blue, red back
-e94 murray violet
-e97 nichols, phil var
-e98 jennings orange, red
-e104 II, III
-T206 Uzit, Drum
-T213 III Byrne
-T214 Victory common
-T215 II common/Pirate
-T216 type III common

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
My 2011 goals aren't very ambitious by most standards but they are as follows:
1) Add to my Boston National T206 super set
2) Complete the T206 Factory 649 Set
3) Add at least 5 Boston National Type Cards
4) Find a Beals Becker American Beauty 350
All the best to everyone in their 2011 endeavors.

Brought 1933 Goudey HOFer collection up to 50% complete
Started and finished a Purdue QB alumni NFL RC collection in nrmt/mt or better.
Gained more focus as to where I want to go with my collection
Goals for 2011
Add one E107 HOFer
Add an E103 Cobb
Deemphasize 1933 Goudey HOFers in my collection
Attend the National Show in Chicago.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
Continue with the Black Sox theme of Weaver & Gandil items. Would like to add the following in 2011:
Chick Gandil - A nice C46 & T212.
Buck Weaver - A nice E100, T207, & Zeenut.
And lastly, continue to work on my T206 HOF portrait sub set. Need many, but am very picky as far as eye appeal goes.
This could take a while, but the search for just that right example is a fun journey I'm having a ball with.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
My collecting goal will consist of one card and probably take my entire card budget for the year. I want one of the cards from the GeorgeD collection. The rest of my card budget will be spent on going to the National. If there is anything left over, I'll try and get a few more Delongs.
Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
Jay...I'd like one of George D's cards too...maybe a t215 type II which will fill a hole for me!!!

My plan is to downsize my collection significantly......and eventually put a big % of my resources into one "dream card"....whenever that opportunity presents itself
Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
ben...interesting...i've thought of doing that too...I look forward to seeing what you get!

I have a similar plan: I'm buying precious metals and hoping they go up in value (so far so good)... then I'd be able to use that to buy a dream card (the one mentioned in the other thread).
I own gold, silver, platinum and palladium... and am even considering a rhodium investment... and you thought baseball cards were speculative! haha

A couple of scarce Walter Johnson cards,
A couple of scarce Sam Rice cards,
A couple of scarce vintage type cards,
And a few more cards of players on Washington's 1924 World Series Championship team.
Happy Collecting to all in 2011,
Val

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
I'm with Ben on the downsizing. I don't think I could ever put all my hobby eggs in one basket, but I'd be content maintaining a collection of a dozen or so cards. I am leaving the door open on a couple possible set attempts - E93 and E103 - but I have a horrific track record of following through such projects to completion and can see myself selling off most of my cards from those issues sometime this year.
I can also see myself putting old cardboard on the back burner for several years and returning to my hobby roots: '80s hockey. I love centenarian cardboard, but at this stage in my life, it makes more sense to sacrifice a month's worth of Starbucks for a new acquisition than it does to spend a car or mortgage payment on one.

Ditto that.....and I've actually done that. It broke my heart to do it, but with the proceeds of selling off my collection (from 44 T216's, to only having 5 remaining), I'll be paying off a very large portion of my debt. I mainly want to do that because with the state of the economy being what it is, it just makes more sense to pay off debt then it does to spend thousands of dollars on cards. T216's just became way to expensive to collect, and when I ran out of things to sell, I ran out of money to keep pursuing the set. Oh, and there's this little thing called "starting a family" that I'd like to give a shot to.
So my collecting goals for 2011 in vintage cards........none.
Life goals for 2011....pay off all my debt, begin trying for kids (towards the end of the year, but more likely in the first part of 2012).
But I will continue to frequent this board, as i'll always love vintage cards, and one day I will come back. I just don't know when.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
That sounds like a great call... "debt is slavery" as they say... if you're stuck paying interest on debt, there is no way it makes sense to own baseball cards or anything else (other than to keep some emergency cash on hand). But paying down debt is almost always the best investment you can make.
And good luck with starting a family! As for cards, you can always keep it cheap, do a team set of T206's or something like that for a few hundred bucks if you want to stay in the game. But a break is nice, too.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
I know that if I converted my collection into just one card that my collection would not stay with one card. I'd start recollecting the cards I sold off for that one card.
Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
I'll keep looking for Cravath cards I need, but the problem now is most of those left are pretty tough to find and that equals more expensive.
I do have a plan to go through all my cards and sell every one that is not Cravath or is a duplicate.

steve--i recently sold off a few opc hockey i collected in the 90's (bourque, coffey, robitaille etc), but still have an andreychuk and gilmour left. lmk if you want them i'll ship them to you. i've been re-collecting moderns again but instead of rookies i'm doing autos. so i sold off those rookies and buying their autos . it's been alot of fun and like steve says you have more room to manuever. already up to 60-70 in all sports just a couple months.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
my goals are:
completing and upgrading my 1933 Goudey set with SGC 84 as the ultimate target. I need about 10 cards now I think, and another 10 to upgrade.
completing my 1934 Goudey set - I need 3 cards.
completing my T206 Polar Bear subset - I need 4 cards.
Probably more important is not starting a new set! I don't need to downsize, but I also don't need to add new ventures either.
But my most important goal is to continue having fun in the hobby and not taking it too seriously.

Are you talking about the D380 Clement Brothers set? If so, what are you considering the master set? The D380 plus the D380-1 Clement Brothers cards?
I'd love to see what you have if you have them posted on a page somewhere. A most ambitious goal!

Yeah... Roberto Clemente makes more sense... especially in the "master set" vein.
I guess I got a little too pre-war vintage in my thinking. The spelling should've tipped me off.

Re: Collecting Aspirations for 2011
Brian - now that you mention it, d380's are cool cards and they're seldomly discussed....here's my type example:
Some day I'd love to pick up a type 2 (rectangular photo) of a HOFer - so far I've seen a Cobb and a Joss, are there others in the set?
Apologies for the OT...
