T206 The Odyssey
As the Great T206 Set nears it's 100th birthday, I was thinking about all the different ways people collect them. I thought it might be interesting to start a list of the different ways and see where it ends up..
- 1. Set
- 2. HoFers
- 3.Southern Leaguers
- 4.Diff. Backs
- 5. One back exclusively
- 6.Double Names
- 7.Cards with Stamps on back
I'll stop here and let others chime in.
Re: T206 The Odyssey
When I collected T206's I started as a set collector. Then changed my focus to HOFers. Then I quit to become a type collector.
As for ways of collecting, what you've listed is the way a majority of collectors do it. Would be interesting to see other ways.
8. TEAM SET COLLECTING within the Monster

I used to be a t206 back collector...then started picking up cards I likes as well..along with t206 highlander cards. Now...I've gotten away from type/back collecting...and just collect certain poses/backs that I like!

Great to have you here, Pete.
Another way to collect the set is to go for "printers scrap" cards, which encompasses cards with ghost prints, severe miscuts, double/triple/quadruple struck backs, and missing colors.

Re: T206 The Odyssey
I started out just with the complete set in mind and went nuts, lots, trimmed, mold anything. Only after really falling in love did i start to appreciate clean high grade and sharp . I have a Ray Ryan with an old mill back (one of my first) that I use as a bookmark. its gone... later RJP

You can collect all the different backs for one card. The only one I have been able to complete is the George Brown, Chicago. The 150 only series cards only have 5 different backs to collect but they are all a little more spendy. I do have 8 different Hugh Duffy cards with different backs but to get all of them is really going to be expensive.

Scott,
I was thinking of going for all the pink backgrounds as well as the gray ones. I thought it was funny that you are also collecting pink backgrounds.
Let's not forget the following ways to collect the set:
- Horizontal poses
- Portraits
- Cards with equipment pictured (catcher's gear, bats, gloves, sweaters, etc)
I'm sure there are a million more.

Re: T206 The Odyssey
Well, I had been trying to build the set and collect as many St. Louis front-back combos as possible within that project, but realized it was just too much. I plan on sticking with the St. Louis project and hope to eventually complete a few player back sets and maybe dabble in a few other favorites: double names/names at top, back miscuts, major HoFers, Hal Chase, and the exclusive subset of Southern League fops:
Re: T206 The Odyssey
I only collect well centered and registered portraits with clean fronts.

Re: T206 The Odyssey
The reason for the "40" is because of a bit of paper loss on the back? Is that what it is? It's a bit difficult to see with the smaller scan. That front is amazing.

Yep, exactly. I've seen similar paper loss on pack fresh T206 that stayed in the pack way too long. I believe that to be the case here as well. It definitely makes for a great bargain on a beautiful card!
Re: T206 The Odyssey
Andy,
Actually, Heather got me into collecting Pink backgrounds a few years back. They kinda grew on me (and must have others as well, as they usually outsell other commons from the same series).

While were on the Subject of T206's why not post a scan of one of your favorites from your collection. Let's keep it to just one.
Here's one of mine

Re: T206 The Odyssey
Right now I'll have to post this one. I have others that are candidates for my favorites, but I don't think it would be fair to post pics until: A) they are paid for, and B) I have them in hand (which are quite a few, while I'm waiting for funds from my sales).
So this is my current favorite.

Eric, that is a great choice! During my collecting of the 150 Series Only cards with different backs, that G. Browne was the toughest with a Hindu back from my experience.

That's good to know. Double bonus. I knew this combo was really tough, I just didn't know how tough. I also know I've only seen this combo come up only once since I started collecting, and I jumped on it.
Note: my observation over the last 13 months, since that's how long I've been collecting.
