Re: E107's
Nice thread guys.
A lot of candy/tobacco/bread/etc premiums were released/introduced during summer time (baseball season) when it was hot. This probably led to a lot of candy/caramel getting on the cards.
E107s must've been packaged closer to the product or the packaging could've been flimsy because a lot of these cards show wear beyond staining. That combined with the thinner, cheaper stock and everything else mentioned, especially kids handling the cards. probably adds to the scarcity of the issue.
Even beyond this though, there must be something else that adds to why these are so tough. I would guess that they were just produced in smaller numbers.
Anyways, they're cool cards that over the past 10 years have gone crazy with values and then come back to earth a bit (except the beloved hofers of course).

Re: E107's
I don't like B/W cards as a rule, but E107's are definitely an exception (along with N172's). Maybe it's because they are all portraits, but something about the photography is just stunning. Every time I see one in decent condition, it becomes my new favorite E107 - they all look great.

Re: E107's
Ben, I think the night you mentioned came before I was even in the hobby....nice memory! I had a shot at that same stained Bender a couple years after that and passed on it. It sold on Ebay for a little over $200 I think. You probably remember me kicking myself over that for a long time. I still do actually
Can't recall a Bender coming available since!
A lot of things I would say about this set have already been echoed so I'll just add one thing -
I've mentioned this before, I feel that as far as the Type 2 cards are concerned, there are two different sources as I've seen these on two different sorts of cardboard stock....one is a dull grey and leads me to believe that the card was cut off of a box. The front of the card even has "greyer" overtones and the card itself is pretty thick altogether. The second is as white as a cue-ball on the back and the thickness of the paper stock is much like the Type 1s. These lead me to believe they were cut from a nice advertising piece which used much nicer cardboard stock than the crude boxes which produced the greyer cards.
Great discussion guys! This is still one of my all-time favorite sets, I just don't collect them anymore because they're so expensive. E103s were made by the same company and I go after those kinda aggressively though! It's a decent compromise I suppose!

Re: E107's
I'm with ya, Brian. I have heard stories about that day where it rained cheap E107 HOFers on eBay, but it was before my time too. Just this week, though, I managed to pick up one of the cards from that group. I will post it when it arrives.

Re: E107's
When those cheap HOFers were selling, I passed on a Plank $400 to buy some n36s I needed. Turned out to be a great investment too, but nowhere nearly as good as the Plank would have been.

Yup it's all coming back to me now Brian

I recall you once winning a big lot of low grade e107 commons from an auction house one time...maybe 5 years ago? Do you still have details on that lot? It's fun to reminisce.
Re: E107's
Does anyone have a breakdown on rarity levels of HOFers from this set? I know Matty, Wagner and McGraw are among the toughest while Plank and Young are seen all the time.

Re: E107's
It is tough to gage the relative rarity of the set, but you are correct ... some are tougher than others. Suffice it to say that none are easy since all of the HOFers have a graded pop of less than 10 (Young and Plank included). Many times, the same cards keep getting reshuffled into different collections. This spring was the exception with 3 Planks on the auction blocks - at least one of which had been sold at least 3 times in the past 12 months (increasing its perceived lack of scarcity). Having it sit on eBay also helps one to think a particular card is common as well.
Flick is also a pretty "common" one. Matty, Wagner, McGraw, Clarke, Kelley, and others are all pretty tough. Others are tough as well, it just depends on the luck of the draw. For example, even though Willis has a graded pop of 6, I would expect that we won't see one of him for quite a while now... so he could end up being perceived as tough from here on out. Who knows, maybe a couple other McGraws will hit the market soon and changing hands frequently such that we'll start to think they are common. It really does become a crap shoot once the pop is under 10.

Re: E107's
Plank and Young have always been known as easy HOFers in set. Even back in the 80s before pop reports.
Re: E107's
Has anyone ever seen a Chance or a Wallace for sale, or even in a private collection? I have to think those two are among the toughest HOFers...
Re: E107's
I know where (at least) one of each is, but don't expect either one of them to be for sale any time soon. Same goes for Hanlon.

...make that 4 times in the past 12 months.

Re: E107's
many of us were probably watching the E107 Bender and Waddell ending on Huggins and Scott a few nights ago. Kinda surprising to see the Waddell outsell Bender, a much tougher card.
I completely agree with what the-illini mentioned above, E107 Chance is a mega tough card. I've never seen one for sale, has anyone?

Re: E107's
Well, I've got to give it to you, Ben. You sure know how to bait me... popping up a thread with E107 in the title.
To answer your question, I have yet to see a Chance for sale since I've been following them. Tough card.
I was pleased to add Mr. Bender to my collection, though.
