Re: January 2008 Pickups
I wanted to post these last night here, but had problems getting on late. Most are from SGC submission, the Wagner I know I've posted win I won it, but it just arrived the other day too and scanned it in with the others.

Dave,
The E98s really look nice all together like that. You've really made great progress on the set in such a short amount of time.
Congratulations!

Nicely done, Dave. The proportion of colors in the cards you posted is interesting. Mostly oranges and greens, a few reds. Do you have any blue backgrounds in your set so far?
Best of luck in tracking down the last few that you need

Thanks Scott and Ben. Trying to put a beater set together like this Scott really makes you wonder how in the world anyone could match yours!
Ben- I definately have fewer blues than anything...four total. And it would figure when they are my favorites!

Re: January 2008 Pickups
the e98 young certainly looks better in the sgc holder than the psa...and usually i don't care either way. looks like dave has made alot of progress, i was at 23-24 e98s but recently i've sold off/traded away some beaters and sold a couple 5s so now i'm back down to 19. will have some pickups on the way.

Yup Quan......I figured that Young would look familiar to you. And I do agree looks much better in the SGC holder than it did that condom wrapper.

Dave,
I am just very fortunate to have obtained my set as a group back in the 1970s from the original collector.
Although I enjoy the uniformity of my set being all one color, I do like seeing the different E98 colors together as in your scan and I do agree with Q that the SGC holders just do the cards a lot more justice visually than the competition.

Scott-
Yeah it would have been great to pick up some cards at those kind of prices that were out there on stuff back in the 70's. But being I was born in 1976...I didn't stand much of a chance.

That's my problem too (born in 1977).
And if I would have had enough sense to stay away from the crap that was put out through the 80's and 90's, and instead picked up the vintage baseball card hobby then instead of a year ago, then all would have been good. Ah, but better late then never I guess.

Don't let Scott M. fool you...he was only 2 years old when he found those cards and worked the deal with the older collector...by the time he was 4 he finished his Crofts set.

He just waited a few long years to give up an extra Croft's for me...Thanks Scott M.
A few from Jan one from late Dec.

Hey John,
Good to see you on the board and glad to see that Mr. Davis made it safely to your place.
Those are some beautiful pickups. I particularly like the Red Hindu back!

wonka you either have great eyes for nice presentable cards or you have one great scanner! i'm always floored by how nice your t206s are for their grades.

The register on those card are great. The t207 Ward Miller is amazing. My guess is that the reason the Mullin graded OC is because of the trim job.

Super nice cards Wonka - sorry for running you up on the Kleinow Red Hindu, as I was one cent behind your bid (I didn't know it was you due to the way eBay "hides" the ID's after bidding reaches $200).
On the bright side - I did lay off the Blue Croft's Candy card that ends tonight when I noticed Scott M. was the high bidder (I could tell on that one, b/c it was under $200 when I checked).

Re: January 2008 Pickups
Jay..just curious not offended or anything..LOL but what makes you think Mullin is a trim job?
I've eyballed the card pretty hard front and back (as good as one can in a plastic tomb) and it looks alot like a few other OC cards I own raw etc. I did sell a Harris card a year ago graded that 100% was trimmed IMO, I even sold it to another collector and told him my concerns discounted it a bit even so I could sleep that night.
None the less love to hear your thoughts...got a great deal on him anyway and he's just fine for the ol'T206 set, besides I have to laugh the card sold for more than half of what the card sold for in 2000. So anyone who tells you high grade cards (commons) are a great investment just smile and nod your head...then turn and laugh to the guy next to you.
Cheers,
John
P.S. Scott no need to say your sorry for bidding but thanks, just glad I won it. Unlike certain people who get bent out of shape and try to end auctions early, or get fired up over the "outing" and auction thing etc. I'm pretty easy in that regard. The rules are simple bid what you're willing to pay and if you had the right number you win if not...oh well there's always next time. (unless its Quan going after the same Plank I'm going after..LOL)

Re: January 2008 Pickups
Wonka - I have to agree with you. Personally, I don't use a snipe service and IF I contact a seller before the auction ends it is to tell him/her NOT to end the auction early that I will be bidding high (I did this on the Red Hindu Pfeffer I won on eBay recently right after the item was listed). Also, I cannot stand those "whiners" either - simply bid what you are willing to pay and see the auction out (at least that is my motto).

Re: January 2008 Pickups
The big red flag is the large gap between the card and the bumper at the top of the card. Given how narrow the that top boarder is, the bottom looks very normal in size. Even though there are size variances in t206s, any short card is automatically suspect. A great looking card with incredible register, none the less.

Well if we're gonna call him names....... he's a damn nice "idiot", and I really appreciated the opportunity to get this card in my collection. It'll be here for a while.
