Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
Notes from the injury report:
I must have had a deep pitching staff. I lost 3 of starters for 15 or more games and I lost Wilbur Wood for 27 games due to an injury from a brawl. That was longest any player was out. 16 games was the next longest for Tom Henke and Dizzy Dean.

Could I see my results please
I didn't even name a DH, and I'm curious how my guys performed.

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
I ran it without a DH. I was curious to see numbers. I personally would prefer that we not use a DH. It forces more managerial decisions.
I'm still trying to remember how to pull up team stats. When I figure it out, I'll post your team

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
I ran the sim a second time. Interesting results. I also found a neat feature that automatically generates the stats as webpages, so I can just upload them to my website and we will be able to look at the stats in a nice format

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
If it only takes a minute to run this, would it be difficult to input my second team with the same pitching staff, and see how they do against the same competition?
Just for Fun
The LongBall Crew
****************
Aparicio, SS
O'Doul, CF
Belle, RF
McGwire, 1B
Sosa, LF
Boyer, 3B
Herman, 2B
Fisk, C
Although, I'm thinking that pitching was our problem.

I would have picked Pray for Rain to play way better than .500 ball.

Ahh very nice, that would be ideal.
Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
Yeah Mark. Those 101 Losses look way bigger than my 99.
It looks like the pitchers took their toll.
Batting and slugging averages are way depressed, although actual HR totals in general look strong. Ted Williams got clobbered, it seems - but the Bridegrooms did well, so maybe not.

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
I am pretty shocked at the results for my team as well.....Hank Aaron did not make a single list in any hitting category. I see a few of my pitchers did okay so I'm guessing my hitting defaulted other than Willie McCovey who must have been the steal of the draft (ninth round).
I like Goose Gossage's line...someone got good production out of him.
even though my team finished slightly above I had a lot of fun making my picks.
Let the trading begin?

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
Ive got a crate of 19th century pitchers that I'll trade for a crate of apples.
If you don't care about teeth marks, neither do I
Then again, only Cobb and Hamilton hit .300? What happened to McGraw, Brouthers, Lajoie, Heilman, etc.
I could have deeper problems than pitching here. I gotta see the data.
The problem is probably my cap doesn't have enough red in it.
What do you think?

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
I need to look and see if I can change lineups. The way the computer manager works is that it places what it feels is the best team on the field for the given ptching matchup, so it does take into account righty-lefty matchups.
I think I might run 10 seasons and see how things balance out as far as team records.

If I understand my team stats on the second run
It seems my record was 95-65----if so, a 21 game swing just by adding a DH? and Jim Kaat, who I likely would not have used as a starter, was 15-14? Barry Bonds can't hit .200 against left-handers? Some real eye openers.

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
Good stuff Jay, having it in the webpage format makes it much more user friendly. Some of the stats are surprising, yes, but I'd imagine we can tweak our lineups before the next year is simulated. I think running the sim over 10 years to see how everything averages out would be interesting as well. Since this is our first crack at this, we might as well explore all possible options so we have a good understanding of how everything works.
One quick question: I noticed that the players have been assigned ages. Is the age of a player completely random?

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
no DH has been added. This is all just a "pure" game still. There have not been any tweeks added, other than ballparks. I'm not positive, but I think it is the start of his peak. You can set up leagues to age players as you complete each season, so that is why the ages are assigned.

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
I ran 10 seasons with just the default settings.
Pray for Rain and the Dunderheads won their respective divisions 7 times each. Other winners included 3 division titles by the Orioles, 2 by the Spiders and 1 by Field of Dreams.
The Dunderheads had the best overall record 7 times including the most wins with 108. The orioles had the best record twice and Field of Dreams and Pray for Rain both had the best record once.
On a side note, the season where the Dunderheads won 108 games, Ruth hit .375 with 71 Hrs and 192 RBI

Why is Alex Rodriguez listed as my starting shortstop and Brooks Robinson my third basemen?

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
That is what the computer manager selected. I'm trying to figure out how get a batting order/starting lineup last more than one game.
I just looked at your roster, who would you have starting in place of those 2?

Re: Results from 2008 season with default manager settings
Of course, the guys whose teams did not perform as good as they had hoped will have the greatest complaints. But in fairness, my starting catcher, Ewing, a .300+ ifetime hitter, had difficulty with the pitching he had to hit, and could not maintain an average of .200. Unfortunately, my backup, Fisk, appears to have been left off the roster, and could not take any of Ewing's 600+ ABs.
Also, my starting RFer, Heilmann, a .342 hitter was benched from the start in favor of Sosa, who hit .222. Sosa was identified as having a pinch hitter assignment (by the owner, me). Heilmann was used as a pinch hitter, and backup First Baseman - a slot which I had intended McGwire to fill.
Please have the sim report into my office. I think that it needs more red in its cap.

I feel your pain
Gil, as the SIM left Derek Jeter off of my roster altogether and let Maury Wills play 158 games, where, remarkably, he only attempted 23 SBs and even more remarkably was successful only 13 times, about half of Barry and Shoeless' SB totals.
