May Pick-Ups
Happy to launch the May thread with a T206 trifecta; two underappreciated stepchildren and an SL.

The Washington version of this Elberfeld and the 'Nat'l' version of this Doyle are worth a lot more, but I'm still happy to have these fellas in the fold.

And any Southern Leaguer is nice to have, regardless.
Welcome to May! Bring on the Players Championship.

Interesting--the photo is reversed. Makes him look like he's batting right-handed and wearing Killebrew's number.

Re: May Pick-Ups
Oliva seems like an excellent example of the Local Statue Principle. He had a very solid career that inevitably many of his fans will say was Hall-worthy, citing the 15-year career, .302 lifetime average, ROTY award, 8 all-star elections, and the Gold Glove. Yet, he's the essence of the borderline player: I think his HOF exclusion is perfectly valid, but he absolutely deserved the statue he was given outside the stadium in Minnesota in 2011.
Even if they don't all deserve 'enshrinement' universally, players like Oliva definitely deserve it locally. Here's to him and all players similar.

Re: May Pick-Ups
The Kleinow Comparison.
Sounds like a lousy late-60's or early-70's espionage film, one that would typically feature Orson Welles and/or Max von Sydow accompanied by an international cast of people no one really cares to watch. But no: It's actually a T206 movie of this week, featuring identical cards with different footers:

Amazingly similar? Nay, identical? One would think, yet the Boston version, despite being little more than typographically different, is five times more valuable (regardless of the back, even though in this case it's admittedly more desirable).
O' the vagaries in this crazy collecting world of ours.

Re: May Pick-Ups
I'm one of the biggest Oliva fans out there, but I don't think he belongs. If his knee had held up for a few more years, he would have been any easy pick for the HOF. Best hitter in the AL in the mid to late 60s but not dominant enough to warrant a plaque.
Re: May Pick-Ups
Couldn't agree more, Jay. Love Oliva; great player. But not all of the guys we love need to be in the HOF. But I'm damn glad he's getting local adulation. He deserves it.

Picked up a small group of vintage Class B New England League documents and the best was this TLS about profanity at games (2 pics)

killer cobb! old flip too, great card...i much prefer the pose and color of the bat on over the bat off. the yellowness has a more sunny disposition than the darker background of the bat-off.
