February 2014 Pick-Ups
I decided to go for the whole Monster, not just Subjects Only. This opened up a lot of new needed cards, so I went a little nuts:
Love the green background on the Wiltse and the yellow on the Howell. The different colors in the background really 'make' this set as much as anything, it seems. And it's amazing how much of an aesthetic difference Abbaticchio's blue sleeves make. It's a very small detail, but it really does make this card more attractive than the brown sleeve version.

If you ever discover Obaks you are in big trouble. They have much better backgrounds than t206s.
Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
I warned ya that I went a little crazy!
And then a couple of HOF's:
These two were surprisingly inexpensive. I don't know if this means that the market is cooling on this set, or I just got lucky. Nonetheless, it was interesting.
I know this is a lot of cards all at once. Thanks for indulging me. No fear on the Obaks: I think the Monster is the end of the road for me. I'm gonna be done after climbing this mountain!

Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
Nice additions guys!
Here's an odd item I recently picked up to add to my "smalls" collection; Satchel Paige pen/pencil topper:
Not sure if it is ca. 1951-53 or a later reproduction. Can't find any info on it. Can anyone help?
Looks very similar to this ebay listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SATCHEL-PAIGE-St-Louis-Browns-Pencil-Clip-/370996641958?pt=Vintage_Sports_Memorabilia&hash=item56611f80a6
But very different from this listing:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Old-Baseball-ST-LOUIS-BROWNS-SATCHEL-PAIGE-Celluloid-Pencil-Topper-Clip-/251308275116?pt=Vintage_Sports_Memorabilia&hash=item3a8323f5ac
Thanks in advance, Ty

My brother Lee had/has one of those pen toppers. He probably an tell you more about it.
Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
Love that Satchel pen cap! First baseball card I ever bought was the 53T Satchel; still have it, even though I've replaced it with a graded one. Too much sentimental value, can't let it go. I'd LOVE to have one of those pens.

Christmas has come early this year for me!
As some/many of you are aware, two of my major collecting focuses are WaJo cards and Sam Rice Cards. And, you may have seen my recent, ecstatic post in the LOTG Auction pick-up thread where I showed the 1921 Herpolsheimer's WaJo 1-of-1 card that I won in the LOTG Auction that ended a week ago.
Well, guess what - a couple of days after my WaJo post, I received an email from a member of the other Board (whom I didn't know, but whom happens to live roughly 25 miles from me) asking if I would be interested in purchasing his 1921 Herpolsheimer's 1-of-1 card of Sam Rice (and, at a reasonable price!). I could hardly believe my eyes as I read this email. Would I be interested - heck, I'd kill for this card, so to speak! I put my check into the mail on Thursday, and the Herps-Rice arrived in today's mail.
I keep pinching myself to make sure that I am not merely dreaming that within a week's time, I have picked up two cards that I never, ever expected that I would be able to obtain. 2014 is already a great year, regardless of whether or not I add anything else to my collections for the remainder of this year!

Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
Sometimes the picking gets pretty slim for central Washington sports history collectibles. Especially in a county of only 30,000 people, so I took some liberties. First, a purely shirttail connection; Bing Crosby's brother, Everett, was born in nearby Roslyn, Washington 1897. Here's a program from a 1951 baseball benefit (Crosby Crooners v. Empire Furniture Legion Team) for Spokane's Gonzaga High School. The event featured Bing in Right Field and four members of the Crosby family, sons of Bing & Everett. Some PCL performers from the Spokane Indians also on the rosters.
Second, a photo of the 1929 Entiat High School football team. The history of Entiat, Washington is bizarre. An apple orchard, the original Entiat (along with this school and football field) was submerged by a dam project on the Columbia River in 1958, as well as many other pre-hydroelectric communities such as Kettle Falls, and Vantage, Washington. These submerged "towns" make for interesting diving spots on the Columbia. Best thing about this image is players names are on the back!!!!!

That's a fascinating formation. Who the heck is the QB? I guess the one third from left in the back row, but he's hardly in an ideal position to take the snap. Love the photo, though. Not a face mask to be seen!

Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
400th card tonight! Not sure if those are trees or a forest fire goin' on behind Leifield. Really like the background on that Doolan. Not too many of these cards have that much stadium detail.
Lord, I just scrolled back through this month's pick-ups. Have I really acquired 28 of these things in the last 16 days? Might be time to admit I have a problem. Or too much free time. Or both.

Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
If you like stadium or detailed backgrounds, Obaks are a much better set to collect. Plus, there are all kinds of back variations
Re: February 2014 Pick-Ups
The 1957 Yakima Bears posing in front of their overly large 1956 Bears Championship banner. Ridiculous. The scan does not do justice to the image. Any helpful pointers??
