2013 ATG league
Looking to see who interested in doing this again. Post your team name here. If you have not participated before, the rules are below. It's basically a draft league and doesn't require a lot of time. Would like to get the draft started around Feb 1st.
Here are the rules:
1. Player Pool
Participants may pick
players from any era of baseball history MLB or Negro Leagues. They must have been a
rookie prior to 1996 to be eligible and have played at least 10 years. Negro
Leagues may have some more leeway in this. You can always PM me to see
if a player is in the database.
2. Draft Order
The order of the draft will be randomly generated by the draft order generator website.Your
picks must be made in observance of the draft order. A new thread will
be posted for each round of the draft. The order of picks will be
clearly posted in these threads. The draft will be snake style, meaning
the first person to pick of the first round will pick last in the
second round. The last person to pick in the first round will get the
first pick in the second round. And so on.
3. Private Messaging
Extremely important. Once you've made your pick, it is your responsibility to PM
the person with the next pick in the draft. Please remember to do this
each and every time to keep the draft moving!
4. Time Limit
There is a time limit of 24 hours to make your pick. If you haven't made your
pick in that time, the next guy on the list is free to pick. You can
make up your missed pick whenever you are able to. If you are going to
be away for an extended period, please PM Jay or someone else you would like to make the pick for you a list of 4-5
players that you're targeting, and we will pick for you when it's your
turn.
5.Format of Player Selection
Selections will be made just like in a real draft. Here's the basic format:
Round 1 pick 6, (your team name) is happy to select: (player name) and (position they will occupy on your roster)
Then an explanation of why you made the pick.
Example:
With the 6th pick of the first round, fisherboy7 is happy to select Johnny Bench, catcher.
Team
fisherboy7 was looking to fill the catcher position with a leader and a
great hitter, and that's exactly what it got in Bench. Blah blah blah
so on and so forth.
6. Roster Thread
Everyone will maintain their roster in a separate thread. On the rosters thread,
you will post your team name, stadium choice and you will add your players to the
empty roster spots as you move through the draft. Each roster will have
24 players. Here is a blank template, everyone can copy/paste theirs in
the same format if they wish. If you'd prefer to shorten your bench and
add a few extra pitchers, that's fine. Just make sure all your
offensive starters are in place. You don't need to have this exact
roster, but it usually works best. I wouldn't go with fewer than 8
pitchers, but you can run 10 or 11, but wouldn't go past that because
then you will hurt your offense, especially if have a lot injuries. To start
at a position a player must have played at least 25% of his career
games at that position.

I am a glutton for punishment. After missing last year, the New York Gothams are back to avoid last place!

I really enjoyed participating last year. I've read a few history books since , but I still know nothing about fantasy gaming. The CNY Stars will return to the league. Mike (m-mac)

ok...I understand the whole draft thing...so how does the rest of it work? Where do the stats come from?

Re: 2013 ATG league
Stats are based on the best 10 run of a player up to 2005. Beyond that, the info is kind of sketchy. Basically, it hurts players like Koufax who were supernovas that were only great for 5 or so years and makes strong consistent players look really good. Koufax is still a top pitcher in the system, but if he had put those numbers up for 10 years, he'd be right there with Johnson, Matty, etc as one of the must have's for the ace of your staff.
Re: 2013 ATG league
What about a player who has fewer than 10 years in the major leagues? If he has 8 years, what happens to the other 2 years?

Re: 2013 ATG league
Those players don't exist in the database except for maybe some Negro Leaguers. For MLB players, if they didn't play 10 years they aren't going to be listed. Joss might be the only exception. Maybe some 19c century players, but a good rule of thumb is, if they didn't play at least 10 years or start their career before 1996, they aren't going to be in the database. Doesn't hurt to ask though.
Re: 2013 ATG league
Here is a partial list of players who have been drafted the last two years but were not in the database:
Vince Coleman
Luke Easter
Dick Radatz
Jose Oquendo
Oscar Johnson
& Gagne was drafted in 2011 & 12 but was not called up until 1999.

I'd like to get one more team so that we have a nice round 10. If/when we get a 10th team I'll post the draft order and we can get started.
Re: 2013 ATG league
Ah what the heck, count me in and let's get this thing started. Give me Joe D. and I'll pray for another 56 game hitting streak.

Re: 2013 ATG league
Is there anyone who'd want to take over "Les Expos" for me? I sort of said I'd do it on a whim to get the league going, but I'm not sure I care... there are so many players to think about. Or would someone want to draft a second team? I'll do the league if I have to, but if there were someone out there... it would great. Thanks.

Come Pete, step and get involved in a REAL fantasy

Re: 2013 ATG league
Looks like I'm stuck with Les Expos, so we might as well get started with the draft and I'll do the best I can.

Re: 2013 ATG league
not that complicated jamie. just pick your favorite players, choose your stadium...set up a general strategy to suit your team. roster can sub for injured players etc.
