Set of the Week: Star Player Candy
The Star Player Candy cards were a long time mystery in the hobby. Originally designated as r317s by Burdick, in a rare move by the hobby the cards have been reclassified as e-unc because it became clear that the date of issue was 1928 and Burdick used R designations for candy cards issued after 1930. It was learned that these cards were issued by Dockman & Sons under the product name headliners & Gum. An amazing find of unopened packs was auctioned by REA 2009.
Cards are sepia colored on a cream stock measuring 1 7/8 x 2 7/8. The 1928 issue cards are blank backed while the even rarer 1929 issued cards are numbered with a brief bio. The front is the same for both having the only the player's name. There is no team designation. The 1928 set has 73 card plus a number of football players. The 1929 set has 3 known subject so far.

While I have never really cared for these cards...that find a few years back was insane! To find a trove of unopened product from the late 20's-early 30's...in the storage facility that held them since then...that will probably never happen again!!!

I've owned a few of these before, and I currently have just one of hofer George Kelly. They are pretty tough to find.
A board member made a very significant find of these a few years ago. I'll let him decide if he wants to share the details with the board.
Important question: would you eat the candies in that Johnson package for $200?
