Goodwin Catalog
I received the Goodwin catalog yesterday and do have to say it is one of the best I have seen. Great pictures and the write ups not only tell about the cards but the background info on the cards and players was fun to read.

hmmm...I TOO received mine yesterday...and honestly...I find the write ups to be kinda annoying...I mean can you cram any more adjectives in a description! I just find auction descriptions/embellishments to be ridiculous these days! YEs...I am souring on this hobby as of lately!!!

As someone who took seven credits of technical writing in college I wish they would employ skilled copywriters in this field. We need work.

Here's an example I actually just E-mailed them about.
Page 95. Lot #51. W600 Lajoie PSA A.
Huge writeup on Lajoie. Little bit about the card. Nothing about why the card graded out as 'Authentic.' VERY frustrating.

Re: Goodwin Catalog
I mean really? Do these ridiculously verbose write ups really correlate to higher hammer prices? They certainly encourage higher catalog printing costs?!?!
You'd think if someone were bidding thousands and thousands of dollars on a piece of old cardboard...they'd atleast know a little bit about the player on the front and his/her career accomplishments...and if you want anectotes...read a friggin book!

Just to clarify a bit, I enjoyed the additional background to the players and the sets from which the cards came from. As pointed out in a previous thread and the above the card descriptions (which should be the most important) go way too far and do not always have pertinent information.
Chris I definately missed that one. I do love the quotes by about the players.

It really irritates me. Most houses do it. I don't know they hesitate to reveal why a card got an 'A' grade. To me, there's a huge difference between cards that were 'A'-d for different reasons.

You'd probably rather have a root canal than read them right? I have to agree with you, rather hucksterish IMO.

Oh I think they definitely correlate, on average, to higher hammer prices. Once collectors get excited, there is no stopping them. Sometimes Goodwin's descriptions are a bit over the top but the proof is in the pudding with the prices. A smart piece of business right there.

You should try the rice pudding at Sultan's Kitchen, a turkish place in Boston. We'll start the bidding at a thousand bucks

Re: Goodwin Catalog
Theres ways to talk fluff around a defect but still mention it, It's better than not disclosing it at all.
Re: Goodwin Catalog
I've always loved pudding...probably started as a kid...mom would make that instant jello chocolate pudding...loved the skins that would form on the top when refrigerated. Then eventually they came out with individual pudding snacks that my mom used to send me to school with.
I always wondered why those never had the skins on top? Hmmm?
And yes...I'd much rather be "doing" a root canal...than reading those annoying auction descriptions...I feel like they insult my intelligence...like motorcycle salesman..."dude...you'll look so cool on this bike...all the girls will want a ride!" And just imagine if you were riding this bike while showcasing this pristine...unbelievably vivid image of the most famous of all nap rucker poses...as frozen in time as Conlon originally intended. The only thing whiter than those borders is a fresh minnesota snow!
Arrrrgh...makes me want to piss in the snow!!!!

Root canals aren't that bad. I had one this year (not from Pete) and I actually fell asleep during the procedure.
The fluff can be annoying but there is no excuse for not disclosing why a card got an "AUTH" grade.

A couple of days have gone by and still no response, or even a "no additional information" response has found its way to me. Somewhat surprising because I used my registered E-mail address and have always paid promptly.

Re: Goodwin Catalog
Finally got around to looking at the catalog last night, awesome stuff. If the writers are going to write up history and bios on the players they should atleast get the info correct, the write up on the Chief Bender PSA 8 contained errors like saying Mack always called him Charles when he actually always called him Albert, and he did sign his auto's Chief Bender all the time. I don't think I've ever seen the word Charley Bender until this write up, anyways awesome cards and should be some insane prices as always, totally agree more time and effort should be spent on describing the card and all attributes especially when graded Authentic and no mention what so ever given as to why.

Re: Goodwin Catalog
Well, Goodwin never even acknowledged my E-mail inquiring about the A designation on the cabinet, which I find somewhat bizarre.
This new company CollectAuctions got my money this month, and with REA's preview up it's safe to say Goodwin won't be getting my money now.
This is nothing like my previous Goodwin experiences. The scratch emoticon says it all.
