1912 Boston Garter Mathewson SGC 10 nets $60K+
I had been watching THIS AUCTION for more than 2 months, thinking since Paragon is a relatively unknown auction site, it might fly under the radar. Boy was I wrong. What did you think about the final price on this card? Clearly an absolute gem, but seeing as it's a SGC 10 (with nice eye appeal) I was thinking it would go for 30-50% of what it ended up selling for.
Oh well I can only dream to someday own a common from the 1912 BG set. Someday.

they had some great cards for a 1st time auction. obviously the new-ness didn't hurt the value here. BG or e107 matty?

The "No buyers premium" will be a big hit. Will they have only a few auctions a year?

Really rare card from a highly sought after set made that one fly. I had no idea how much that card would bring, but was a little surprised to see how high the reserve was ($50k). I guess that was a pretty good reflection of the value. Paragon put on a pretty nice auction and got significant attention.
The pay for advertising idea is interesting. I wonder if there is a minimum level of advertising that the consignors are required to do. Put it this way... if there are some nice items in the auction and the auction will get some good traffic from that (especially as it becomes more recognized), what is to stop someone from consigning and passing on advertising in their catalog in order to realize the maximum profit (unless there is a minimum set). I could see this quickly turning into a sellers fee, which is essentially what a minimum advertisement space would end up being. Gross exaggeration to prove a point... if REA did the same thing, would someone consigning to REA need to advertise in the catalog if the piece was rare enough not to get lost in the auction? REA gets enough traffic that the lots will attract attention on their own. If Paragon begins to really thrive, I'd think their fee system would have to change.
Oh, and Quan... if you are offering, I'll choose the E107 Matty.

I'm about as big a 1912 BG fan as there is, and even then, I'd have a hard time choosing the BG Matty over a E107 Matty. Good question though.
Re: 1912 Boston Garter Mathewson SGC 10 nets $60K+
I would pick the BG, I love the beating that is going down outside while Matty sits inside sipping his afternoon tea.

no contest for me...the BG over the e107 any day...the beautiful color imagery trumps bland b/w image all day long 4 me!

Oh the E107 is a much more classic pose, and a portrait, too. I'll take that one :-)

maybe i subscribe to the "more card for the money" theory...but if it's a tie between 2 cards then the bigger one always win. i chooose BG even tho i like the 107 ALOT (capitalized for emphasis).
so the score is 4-3 BG over the e107 right now.

Hey Jeff, what's wrong with looking gay?
You need "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy", haha.

part of the allure of the BG's to me...is the uniqueness of the "gay" poses! C'mon...it's hilarious seeing grown men...ballplayers...wearing garters to hold their socks up depicted as pseudo-cartoons!!!!!!
And I never noticed the background...it DOES kinda look like a beatdown...just a funny angle!!!

I would like to think the guy with the bat is saying, "and this is for wearing my Boston Garters!"

I’ll try some here we go…
“Hey Larry see if this fixes your lazy eye…how’s that feel now?”
“Sure you can have till next week to pay the money you owe me…here’s a little reminder just in case you forget again!”
“For the last time Tom stop peeking in the window while Mr. Mathewson is changing you’ve been told now twice!”
“Carl!” “Yes coach?” “For the last time leave the bat at the plate when you run the bases after you get a hit.”
“You want Velvet Grip ohhh, I got your Velvet Grip right here jackass!”
“Stew I slept with your sister last night are you ok with that? What are you doing with that bat Stew….Stew..whoa Stew calm down”
“Hey Bill dude hit me in the head really hard will get that guy over there to photograph it, then will sell these photos of us doing these crazy dangerous things for money! Will call it DonkeyAss or something like that” “I don’t know Steve-O if that is something that people would really be into maybe like in a 100 years or something?”
“Did you get that bug on my hat?” “Yep got em”
Cheers,
John

Honestly, the Boston Garter is a great card, I really just wanted to use the dancing pink elephant emoticon at least once in my life.

Since I started a thread on 54 about this a few weeks ago I guess I will play here since no one over there played along.
From 54 Thread: I was looking at the Paragon Auction site and was enamored by the BG Matty card. It struck me as funny and astounding at the same time. I think I found out why Matty won so many games. He was a "Gangsta." So I will start it off:
McGraw--"You go pose for your picture Christi and I will take care of our competition Mr. Plank for you"
