T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Thw Piedmont 460 Factory 42 seems to be the most under appreciated of all the tough backs. I personally do not remember the last time I saw one for sale on ebay. I personally have 4 of them including a Frank Smith Boston & Chicago, had a Baker but sold it.

You are correct Lee. I only have three total (Cobb Bat Off, Willis Throwing and a PSA 6 common). That Baker sounds nice - I have a mini collection of Bakers with rare backs and that is one of the few I am missing.
Personally, I have always considered a Piedmont 350/460 right behind Uzit and Red Hindu in terms of rarity - definitely rarer than a Black Lenox IMHO.
It would be great if other board members would list the Piedmont 350/460 Fact. 42's they have, as it would really help us get a feel for their real rarity! Great topic Lee!

I wish I would have had more $$$ to spend when you auctioned the Red Cobb - that one would have looked very nice with my Bat Off Fact. 42 Joe!

1. Harry Davis (Davis)
2. Arlie Latham
3. Nap Lajoie (bat)
4. Heinie Wagner ( bat right)
5. Hooks Wiltse ( sweater)
6. Cy Young (glove)
that is a list from memory-I might have 1 or 2 more

Jim - 7 Fact. 42 Piedmonts (especially with Brown, Lajoie and Young) are very impressive! Of course, your entire collection is very impressive, so I shouldn't have expected any less from you!

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Thank you Scott. Here is one more T206 back that is rare -maybe not as rare as Piedmont 42 but the Sweet Cap 350-460 from factory 25. This back is probably the toughest Sweet Cap. I think I only have about 8-10 different. Try not to buy them all up because I would like to get a few more for my collection. JUST KIDDING! insert smiley!

Jim, I do know, from collecting the cards issued in the 150 Series Only when I started back collecting again in 2003, that Fact. 25's are really tough in the 150 Series as well (on the Sweet Caps). Again, nothing like a Factory 42 Piedmont, but definitely much much tougher than Fact. 649 and Fact. 30.

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
I won one of my favorite T206 HOF'ers (Griffith, with a nice sunset background) with a Piedmont Fact. 42 back. Some might have missed this one, as it was not listed as such. One way to tell a Fact. 42 from small scans is the factory line is longer than the normal Piedmont 350/460 Fact. 25.

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Nice pickup Scott! I missed it. The price seems about right for Piedmont 42 but I think it is a great price. If this were Red Hindu or Uzit -the auction would have been $800 to $1000 easy. Probably more!
The Piedmont 42 doesn't get the recognition it should but that is better for us.
Very nice pickup!

Nice score, Scott. I set a snipe on that one when I first saw it, hoping nobody else would see it. Wishful thinking, obviously.
Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Definitely a nice score! I don't think I ever had one in my collection when I was collecting T206's. I've got the scans of all the cards I've owned, so I'll look through them.

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Thanks for the nice words guys.
Steve, I should have known someone as astute as yourself would have seen this one - just glad not too many others did! BTW - after I eat my Ribeye and Baked Potatoes in a few minutes, I will start searching for some St. Louis rare backs and send you a list of what I have (I haven't forgotten).
Jim - I have come to the conclusion on these Fact. 42's that, while they are low in price, it is a great time to start hoarding them. TBH, when I collected rare backs (before I quit collecting in 2001), I had more of every tough back (Uzit, Red Hindu, Drum, etc.), except BL 460's, than I did Piedmont Fact. 42's. The same is still true for my collection - I have more of every back (except BL 460's) than I do Piedmont Fact. 42's. Also, this cannot be b/c I haven't been looking for them, as I have. With more and more people becoming educated about true Vintage Rarities :study: , it is only a matter of time before these Piedmont Fact. 42's start to climb IMHO. If they don't, I will be elated, as I will definitely be looking to buy more!

I have to agree the price seems right for Pied 42. I am amazed the seller did not pick up on the back. Nice pick up though.
Does this mean you are ready to trade me the Cycle 460 back now?

Sure Lee - I'll trade it to you for a common Fact. 42 Piedmont - how's that sound? For some reason, I have started to like those Fact. 42's and have managed to pick up a couple lately (including this one and another in a trade with a board member). BTW - I can't believe you were outbid on the last Cycle 460 Griffith Batting - that sucker went for about $95 more than I paid for mine only a few weeks earlier! Anyway, you can e-mail me anytime you are ready to work out a trade - doesn't matter to me, as those Griffiths do have a neat sunset background!

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Updated list. I have picked up a few more Piedmont 350/460 Factory 42's, so I thought I would add them to our checklist.
1) Ty Cobb - Bat Off Shoulder
2 & 3) Ames - Hands Above Head (I have two of this card - in case someone would like to trade one of their Factory 42 dupes - PSA 6 and SGC 30)
4) Willis - Throwing
5) Griffith - With Bat
6) Murphy - With Bat
7) Leifeld - With Bat

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
I noticed a thread on Net 54 today about the prices of Piedmont Fact. 42's. In the thread Jim R. mentioned me winning the PSA 4 Murphy for $200 recently. I do have to admit that Jim and a couple others laid off when they saw I was high bidder. If they hadn't, the item would have went higher (depending on what they were willing to bid). For the record, I bid $459.99 as my max bid, so I was willing to pay that much for this specific card in a PSA 4 grade. Sometimes winning bids can be deceiving, as in this situation (where people didn't bid - THANKS AGAIN BTW!, and I bid much higher than what I won the card for).
As Jim R. touched on, a PSA 4 of a Red Hindu or Uzit common would be many times this amount. While, Fact. 42's are in the same rarity category as Red Hindus and Uzits, since it is only a factory variation, they definitely will not sell for the same amount (which would be around $1500 for a PSA 4 Red Hindu or Uzit common), but at $200, I consider the Murphy a steal and was very pleased with the pickup. As for the value I place on a PSA 4 Fact. 42, I would put them in the $450-$550 range myself currently.

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Scott,
For the most I agree with you I also will take a PSA 4 Uzit for $1500 if you have a clean one. I think after my recent run at a red Hindu that $1500 might be a bit light for Uzit and RH but I hope you're right, I still need an Uzit in 4 or better.
Cheers,
John

Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
You are right John - $1500 being low for a PSA 4 Uzit. The last two SGC 30's I acquired cost me $1250 each. I would say $2k+ for a common Uzit or Red Hindu is more along the line.

I was affraid of that Scott....for once in my life I was wishing I was so wrong, $1500 is a lot easier to deal with...LOL
Re: T206 Piedmont Factory 42
Hi, Thought I would contribute a Lionel Carter card to the discussion as while extremely tough Factory 42 are interesting as they do slip by some times. Not sure if anyone else noticed or even picked up but a Latham PSA 7 in the last Memory Lane auction and the Steve Novella Johnson PSA 7 on ebay were both unadvertised Piedmont Factory 42s if I remember correctly.
Haven't figured it out yet but seems like some of the same cards more frequently end up with the tough backs as John just picked up this same Schaefer Washington in an American Beauty (something to do with a late team revision perhaps?) and I actually have a Ames Hands Above head factory 42 in which Scott has 2 of (used to have his PSA 6). Anyway while I don't post much glad to join what seems like a very friendly and informative board as I have dealt with a number of you before in my T206 travels.

Tom and Lee - nice Schaefer's!
While I don't have that particular card with a Fact. 42 back, I do have it with Uzit and Lenox backs (sorry Lee - no Cycle 460's for Schaefer - I do have TWO Uzit Schaefers however!).
Tom, I never noticed the cards you referred to with Pied. 42 backs (wish I had). TBH, Steve listed so many high-grade cards that were trimmed inside the PSA holders, I quit looking through them after the first dozen or so. So, I never saw the Johnson unfortunately.

Tom - BTW, great post - look forward to more - especially with scans of those rare-backed T206's!
Lee - Don't know if you are willing to part with your Schaefer Fact. 42. However, if you are, I have an SGC 50 Griffith Cycle 460 I would trade you for it!
