skinned 19c cards

Post by m-mac on Fri Jun 13, 2014 2:30 am

What are the current views of skinned 19c cards such as old judges? From what I have previously read, I think off of cycleback, these cards are actual real photos mounted on cardboard. Why were these skinned? Poor mount? Remove the mount, paste in a scrapbook? Were they pasted in scrapbooks then skinned when removed (are these cards soakable?)

If I want to collect these, are skinned cards candidates for encapsulation by third party graders as authentic at present? I suppose I could look this up on their sites.

I think these are cool cards, but the skinned ones seem to be cheaper. I know that collectibles in original, as issued condition, are always preferable. What kind of discount or penalty do these carry for decent images?

I am slowly obtaining Cincinnati players.

Thanks for your inputs thoughts and sharing of information.

You've probably touched on all the reasons a card would be skinned.

I am pretty sure they would get an AUTH grade. No reason not to since they haven't been "enhanced"

If you are looking strictly at OJs, even skinned OJs with a great image will fetch a good price. I know some OJ collectors don't give the back much consideration since they are blank.

Im of the opinion to leave the card alone even if its been thru hell and back. Jay and I have had conversations on this forum about restored cards before and I guess its up to the individuals preference.I prefer a poor or rough card over a doctored one but if it was a card I really wanted and couldnt afford in better condition I would buy one that was "skinned","altered" or "restored. So I guess my advice is.. Its up to you. There is no right or wrong answer because like Jay said there are collectors who dont give the back of some cards with blank backs much consideration.

Thanks for your comments. I do not want to skin these cards. I am occasionally in the market and I sometimes see skinned ones offered. Since I think that these are blank backed, I might not really care if these are skinned.

Just be carefull who you buy from. As long as they are honest about it being skinned then you are ok. Its the people who skin cards (blank back or not) and are dam good at what they do that sometimes scam buyers into thinking its original and get more money than they should. Im guilty of letting my emotions get the best of me only to question later the authenticity of a card. Even if its a 20 dollar card no one likes being lied to.

I don't like skinned cards and obviously they will go at a major discount. However, if you are on a very limited budget, then they are a great way to grab some awesome OJ photos at a major discount.
