Even dumber is the high prices paid for low grade Bengough cards. The card is not rare, but for some reason the high price of high grade cards has trickled down to the lower grades.

I agree with this completely. I don't agree that the rubberband damage or card #1 high-grade difficulty is a myth. There is an interesting discussion of that topic across the street on the post-war forum, including links to current or recent auctions where you can tell that the 1952 Pafko card (another #1 card from an iconic set) was the victim of banding.

The best looking Pafko I ever saw was part of nice lot of 52s that were all in numerical order except for some reason the Pafko got stuck in the middle of group. I just assumed he didn't have the card.
