2012 REA - Discuss your results surprises...high or low
One that I was pretty surprised by was the M131 Devlin in SGC 20. Went for $2250 with juice. I would have thought a few hundred...definitely well under a thousand.

I figured that the Blyleven artwork would have gone cheap given that most people poo-poo his induction. Instead I finally had to throw in the towel even though I really wanted it.
Thought the Rockne card I got was a steal. I'm not a football fan but I couldn't pass up an iconic card going for well below market.
t205s in general seemed to take a beating. My lot didn't pull anything close to what I thought it would. Thankfully my Delongs and my crap lot exceeded expectations.
The SF Hess Keefe at $40k I thought was crazy.

I'm not really tuned into the market for player contracts, but I was astounded by some of the selling prices. For example, the George Kell contract (Lot 760). Kell is about a $10-20 autograph. REA estimated the contract at $500+. I would have guessed it would go no higher than that.
Final price including juice...almost $9,000.00!
There were several other contracts where the same thing happened...
Joe Sewell - also a cheap auto - over $10,000!
Rick Ferrell - also a cheap auto - over $8,000.
I don't get it.

If you own the contract then you get paid that much money of the course of the next several years of the contract. That's why they go for such a premium.

Re: 2012 REA - Discuss your results surprises...high or low
I was very surprised at how low the Successful Farming promo set went--about $27K inc/juice. In last year's REA, three blank-backed shortprint m101-5s sold as a group for $35K+, or nearly $12k apiece. They included two commons and Wallace, and all were properly graded SGC 10 poor.
This year's Successful Farming promo set is at least as scarce and probably moreso (it's also m101-5), has JOE JACKSON and 4 HOFers including Lajoie and Alexander, and contains the highest graded Successful Farming cards known (other than Alexander, whose SGC 40 is a technical grade--the card presents as at least a 70). And they go for far less than half and closer to one-third of last year's lot per card. Now personally I still think last year's auction was either shilled or had at least one bidder bombed out of his mind, but this year's went low anyway--these cards are tough!

The Keefe card was a rare example of a time where the auctioneers vastly underestimated the value of a card while the bidders simultaneously vastly overpaid. I think the Keefe is really worth about 20-25k.
As for the lots I tracked, the N172 Anson went for less than I expected, and the Rusie went for more. I thought the Rusie would go for about 5k, and I thought the momentum from the N162 Anson might carry over the N172 Anson, but it didn't.

alot of the mid grade t206 hofs went for 25-30% over ebay prices.
a signed exhibit walter johnson went around 7.5k with juice...don't know enuff about that market yet to say high but i was certainly surprised. the exhibit factor probably pushed it over...nice gehrig and ruth photos were in the 2.5-3.5k range.

the t206 planks were also downright reasonable...too bad i don't have a spare 30k would've made a run at that (ugly?) sgc 30....if there's such a thing as an ugly plank.

IMO, the "Mr X Collection" Plank is a truly ugly card with the image so badly off register.
Re: 2012 REA - Discuss your results surprises...high or low
The only lot I was keeping close tabs on was the 1912 Boston Garter Collins. Amazing card in great shape, went for 25k which is about what I expected.

What do you guys make on the price of this Kalamzoo Bat. It is the card I wanted the $600 bid but couldn't go $700.

The ugly trim on the bottom kept me from going after it. Probably would have been a decent buy at $700. It's not like K-Bats with ad backs show up all the time. Just have to ask if you live with that ugly trim.

$600 is a fair price. I think you made the right call by not going any higher.

M101
I though the M101's had some pretty crazy prices both up and down, not really sure what to make of them-
1916 M101-5 Sporting News #151 Babe Ruth Rookie - PSA EX-MT 6- $120,000
vs
1916 M101-4 Herpolsheimer #151 Babe Ruth Rookie - SGC VG/EX 50- $65,000
I just dont really get the price different between the two, I would much rather have the tougher back than the higher grade, the blank backs are so much more common, was shaking my head on this one.
1916 M101-4 Herpolsheimer #87 Joe Jackson - SGC 60, Highest Graded!- $5,500
VS
1916 M101-5 Sporting News #86 Joe Jackson SGC 50, (Famous & Barr Ad on Back)- $3,500
Another where it seemed that the price to go up one grade and a different back was almost double, either one went too high or one was a deal.
1916 M101-4 Herpolsheimer #38 Ty Cobb - SGC 80 Highest Graded!- $6,500
VS
1916 M101-4 Herpolsheimer #87 Joe Jackson - SGC 60, Highest Graded!- $5,500
I was shocked at the Cobb price, which in the past has been about half the price of the Jackson, this one made no sense to me.
1916 M101-4 Herpolsheimer #91 Walter Johnson (1:1) SGC 80- $2,000
VS
1916 M101-5 Sporting News #90 Walter Johnson SGC 80, (Famous & Barr Ad on Back)- $1,600
This is the only one that made sense to me, both great looking cards and the prices were right in line. Congrats Todd, I had my eye on that Johnson too, great card!
Just wanted to see what other thought on these?

One of the few lots i noticed that sold relatively cheap was the fro joy set...a little over $200/card...most lots sold for retail to high retail.

Sadly, I drove up that Cobb price. The card is maybe worth half. There are a bunch of examples of the 1916 Herpo Cobb; I paid a couple grand less for the 1921 PSA 6 Cobb Herpo and it is a 1/1 card.
