2012 season
The league is broken down into two divisions. The season will be 160 games. We are using a weighted schedule so you will be playing more games against the teams in your division than in the other one. The winner of each division will play for the Championship. The Champ will get a custom title and bragging rights for a year.
AL - Gas House Gang, Oppie Dildocks, bkasarda, Washington Senators, Vietnam Vets, Brooklyn Bums
NL - Dominican Canucks, Phenomenal Smith's, callmefugazzi, Seattle Pilots, Pittsburgh Allegheneys, CNY Stars

You also get to select what park you want your team to play in. You can choose any park from 1901-2006
Re: 2012 season
Maybe some of the veterans of this league can fill us rookies in on how this is going to work.
Does the scoring system only work based on a players offensive stats? In other words, does it do you any good to draft someone who was a Gold Glove winner or had strong defensive stats? (Except for pitchers)
I PM'ed Jay earlier, and he indicated that the sim uses an algorithm that compiles the best 10 consecutive years of the player, so I'm thinking I should be looking for players that had consecutively strong stats for at least a decade.
Does anyone use any type of strategy in drafting or is it just a "pick your favorite guy" situation?

Re: 2012 season
The sim is pretty detailed. It takes into account not only offense, but fielding and durability. A player that was injury prone in his career will be injury prone in the game. There is a neat function in the game that after the if there is a third HBP that a brawl will break out usually leading to an injury or two and suspensions. Pitching durability is also taken into account, same with catchers. No catcher can play every game behind the plate. The fatigue factor will kill his offense and defense.
Everyone has their own strategy. Lee (bowlingshoeguy) tried for an all Negro League team one year. Others have drafted players from their favorite team. Last year, I failed trying to use a top heavy team of basestealers. Ben (fisherboy) is the guy to ask about strategy as he has played in 3 of the 4 championship games, so he seems to have a good system.

Re: 2012 season
We still need 2 of the teams to post their rosters. IT helps to keep track of the players taken.

Re: 2012 season
Let's keep any talk about the draft on this thread so that we can look at the last post and know who drafted last. Keeps things simpler and makes drafting quicker and easier. We also need to get everyone to post their roster in that thread.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: 2012 season
Jay - Sorry about the non-draft pick comments in the draft thread. I forgot all about your request to keep the chatter to this thread.
That being said...
Doesn't everyone realize that the Cardinals are off limits??? Any player who ever wore a Cardinals uniform at any point in his career belongs to me!!!
I want to revise the draft rules to reflect this!

Re: 2012 season
too bad the sim only goes through the '06 season...pujols would've been a nice pickup.

Yeah...Pujols would have been 1st round draft pick material if he was eligible for this league.cccc wrote:too bad the sim only goes through the '06 season...pujols would've been a nice pickup.
Goshdarnit!!! Now Danny drafted Lou Brock. Did someone hack into my computer and steal my wish list for the draft???
I guess trying to draft an all-Cardinals team has its drawbacks.

you won't have any competition from me for the benes brothers

Re: 2012 season
I'm surprised you took Schoendiest so early. I don't think he has ever been drafted before. I certainly would have taken Sutter or Brock before him.
I agree, Clemente was a great pickup this late. I would have probably snagged him but I already have a full outfield.

Re: 2012 season
Well...live and learn. I had lost out on 2 other second basemen (Rogers Hornsby and Frankie Frisch) so I made a panic pick in Schoendiest. In hindsight, I should have set up a draft order. I've just been winging it so far...and when you wing it, dumb stuff happens like picking Schoendiest before Brock or Sutter.sabrjay wrote:I'm surprised you took Schoendiest so early. Re: 2012 season
Seems like we've hit a lull in the draft. 2 picks in 2 days. What can we do to speed this thing up?
Re: 2012 season
We need to make sure that people PM the next person. I know that helps a lot of people especially if they don't check the board frequently.
Re: 2012 season
When we hit round 16 we start double picks. We are on round 10-11 rebound so double picks will be happening soon.
If you know you are going to be away from an extended period you message with your top choices or message them to someone else so they can make the pick for you. Be sure to rank them in order of preference. We've done this in the past and it has worked out fine.

Re: 2012 season
Shaping up to be an interesting season. I don't see anyone that looks like they've got a run away team (except me
). The Negro Leaguers are always the great unknown.
I like my chances of getting back the title. I ditched the speed squad and went for more power this year. Last year my team got caught stealing more times than any other team had stolen bases.

Re: 2012 season
What are the rules regarding designated hitters? Will the Americal League use them while the National League does not? And if so, what's the rule for inter-league play?
Of course, rookies (like myself) should never be allowed to talk smack. In fact, unless you have a championship under your belt, you really ought to be taking notes on what the successful vets are doing.
I can't argue with you there. Limiting my picks to only former Cardinals has tied one hand behind my back. Couple that with some poor draft decisions on my part, and things start looking a little bleak before the first pitch is even thrown.sabrjay wrote:I don't see anyone that looks like they've got a run away team (except me).

Re: 2012 season
Everyone make two picks at a time unless you are one of the ends, then you make 4 picks
Re: 2012 season
Ty, no more sauce for you. I wanted Wilbur Wood
I was hoping he would slide to about round 20 though. Good pick in my book. Durable lefty that that can start or relieve.

Re: 2012 season
how did i miss frank thomas and drafted jack clark instead? that bummed me out the whole weekend! i surely thought he was gone by that point.

I've been meaning to ask, does the sauce come in keg form yet? If so, I'd trade Wood straight across...

Re: 2012 season
Rounds 22 & 23 are finishing up. When the draft heads back up it will be rounds 24 & 25. Once the last pick is made and the line ups and managers settings submitted we can get the season under way.
Re: 2012 season
What about breaking the season down into smaller chunks? Instead of quarters, maybe months or weeks? Would give us more to follow and adds to the suspense a bit. Otherwise it's all over real quick. Just a thought.
