Greatest ever
I really do need to stop looking at pop culture lists of "greatest ever". I just read a list a where George Mikan wasn't even on the list of top 10 Lakers of all-time. WTF? The guy only revolutionized the game and was the reason for some major rules changes.
Re: Greatest ever
I think it was rolling stone that recently voted the best guitarist of all time...hendrix! No contest in my opinion...atleast they got that right!

Re: Greatest ever
I'll agree...with this caveat:
1. HENDRIX
2. Vaugn
3. all the rest

Re: Greatest ever
I read an interesting article about that RS list. They noted that in 2000 Van Halen was ranked 87th (I think, but it was barely on the list). Now he is top 5. The guess is that since he is going on tour soon that they wanted to be in his good graces since there was apparently some bad blood there. So much for a reasonable objective list.
You have to have Glen Beck in the top 5. Maybe Buckethead. Hendrix is a no brainer like Ruth is a for baseball's best ever.

Re: Greatest ever
"Glen" Beck? Do you mean Jeff Beck?
I used to drive by Hendrix's grave every day and would typically stop by once or twice a week to um... roll some cigarettes. It used to be a flat headstone, very understated, now they have a beautiful gazebo and monument at Greenwood Cemetery in Renton. Highly recommend stopping by it if you are ever in the area (short trip from Seattle).
Lists of the Greatest Ever are soo subjective. The Mikan snub is atrocious. What ten players were taken before him? Please do not say Kurt Rambis.

Re: Greatest ever
I'd have to put EC and Carlos at or near the top. The Yardbirds had some serious talent on the guitar--Clapton, Beck and Page.
Duane Allman could play. Neil Young's Like a Hurricane is classic.

Re: Greatest ever
I agree with pretty much all of the names being mentioned here. Hendrix is unmatched as a guitar player, an otherworldly creative talent. The diversity and volume of material he recorded in his short life is astounding. Paige, a personal favorite, was an amazing song writer and riff maker, but had a tendency to be sloppy, especially as a hardcore drug addict in the late 70's and 80's. Clapton, Allman, SRV, absolutely. Slash is worthy of consideration, but IMO G&R library is only two quality albums deep, and he didn't do anything too special outside of G&R.
A few names I'd add to the discussion:
Django Reinhardt
Carlos Santana
David Gilmour
Brian May
Marty Friedman
Randy Rhodes
Chuck Berry
BB King
James Hetfield

Re: Greatest ever
A very complete list. For those surf guitar enthusiasts I'd like to add Dick Dale, and Gabba-Gabba-Hey to all punk fans out there as Dee Dee Ramone would say, "it doesn't matter if it's three chords, as long as it's the best three chords!"

Re: Greatest ever
Ty covered the two I as going to add.
Yeah, I meant Jeff Beck. Had just finished up a discussion about factually challenged at FoxNews(cough) so I sadly had Glen on the brain.
