The new 2012 Standard Catalog of VINTAGE baseball cards
Not sure if this has been discussed before on this forum or on Net54, but it looks like Vintage collectors have finally gotten their wish:

My pre-order is in and I can't wait.

Ha - I just posted the question on Net54 and was going to post here. I received an automated message about it and was trying to confirm whether it was true or not. From the link you posted, I guess it is true!

What a difference 25 lbs of book will be compared to the old 50 pounder

Nothing against the newer stuff, but honestly a book can only get so big before it becomes a two man job just to get it off the book shelf.

thanks for the heads up! that's great news...O preordered mine...1 touch pre-ordering...how easy spending money has become! Still a hefty book...but definitely a little more manageable! Personally I'd have stopped at 1973.

Re: The new 2012 Standard Catalog of VINTAGE baseball cards
Here's a serious question (not meant to be insulting...and with all due respect to Mr. Lemke):
Other than for handy checklists, is there any value at all in a book like this? For the last several years of my collecting, I have not even glanced at a printed price guide...they are worse than useless, because in most cases they deceive you into over-valuing cards relative to actual prices realized at auctions.
I much prefer VCP, or for that matter any number of free internet searches that would reveal actual prices paid in the current market environment.
I admit I have not previewed this 2012 book, but I cannot imagine it will provide anywhere near the amount of real pricing information available from internet sources.
Thoughts?

Since my collecting interests are mainly confined to Post-War Minor league and Latin American issues, I buy the Catalog almost entirely for the checklists. The price listings can sometimes be helpful, but I don't usually go by them. I have found experience to be a far better guide in determining what I should pay for a card.

You are right, a price guide is pretty useless to an advanced collector, but I pretty sure these are geared more towards the average person.
Personally, I'd like to see something done like the old Lipset books with detailed write ups about each set. Forget about the pricing and just tell us about the sets and maybe have a some sort of ranking as to how rare they are. That's more useful to an advanced collector, or someone looking to become more knowledgeable.

Agreed...books are useless for pricing...I like them for referencing issues I'm not familiar with and for checklists. They should change the price tiers as most pre war are not available in nm...and as has been said...this causes overvaluation...I feel!
