Card HOF nominations, Riddler June 2010
E223s are simply too historically significant to ignore any longer. They represent the only significant e-card issuance in the 1800s, and constitute a set of nearly 100 cards! Unfortunately, clarity in the identification of the player was typically lacking. However, when everything was right, it was still no big deal (other than historical presence).
A card set of the era which was a big deal, I think is the Lone Jacks. What I find important in them is that their production methodology resulted in a three dimensional portrayal of the upper portion of the card, yielding the suggestion of depth in a framed portrait. The example shown is typical of the set (not unique).
The Browns Champions were particularly well done in this regard:
Some other cards seem to me to just be powerful. The George Wright card from the Spalding Collection:
The Just So Young:
And for a seriously well designed set, just about any of these (but O'Neil is my favorite)
Oh heck, I almost forgot the K-Bats - always a tuff call - so many top contenders. Here is my current recommendation, 'til I can beat it.
Sometimes you gotta nominate a loser who is unqualified, but that is the only reason it is a loser. This item may not be a "card" in everyone's assessment. But it is my nomination.

Very cool composite. During the next round of voting, the Just So Young will definitely be in there.

A 'lil more: just sayin'
Wasn't that the Communist Party who allowed you to vote for anyone you wanted, but they controlled the nominations?
Hey - it was a party!

Some N43's also show equipment along with belts. Were the belts used to hold the equipment together when traveling?

Ben, the only info which I have on the item which you asked about is that it represents the 1888 National League.
I do not recall my source for that image, and my reference material is currently misplaced (on a stick). I will continue to hunt for that flash drive device - it is probably in a pair of old sneakers, having fallen out of my pocket in the closet following my wife washing my jeans (with the stick in them), and hanging them up.

Those are some great cards...I suppose there are a fair # of 19th century issues that are HOF candidates for historical purposes as an issue...not necessarily for the player on the front? 1st tobacco card...1st gum card for sure...different milestones within the oj set designating different years and seriess'.
FOr 20th cent...I'd like to see the cj walter johnson.
