This item bears similarity with a w516.

But of course, a w516 was not issued until the 1920s or so.

These appear to be some kind of transfer, sticker or decal. I have only seen a few of these over the years and they are not catalogued anywhere that I have ever seen. I recently saw a Heinie Groh, and I have seen one or two other players that all were included in (and had the same images as) the W516 sets. If you look at enough W516's you would probably be able to tell who the card next to Walter is as well. They are rare and may someday get catalogued, cool item that I forgot to bid on from my watchlist on ebay (it was hidden inside a book!).

This of course dates the images of the w516 set to more than 10 years prior to its issuance. I wonder which players in that set were not active in 1909 or before.

Not necessarily - you are assuming that the "transfer" was applied to the book in 1909. It might have been applied years later (1920s).

This is true. I do not have evidence to support the conclusion which I drew. Alternate possibilities exist.

so I did look up the book, it was entered in to the library of congress in 1859. So the year means nothing, the transfer has to be from the 1920's the image is about spot on to the strip card posted above. thanks for the help BOB
