When the image is clear and the contrast is perfect, 19th century photos are gorgeous.

And when the subject matter is informative, it is even better.
It's my guess that there are novices, other than me, who did not know that 1880s catcher's gear was as advanced as shown.

I'm dumbstruck by the beauty of N173s. I also realize I'm about 50 to 100 years late. Is anyone aware of a good website where we can see most or all of the set?

Boston's Library, Spalding Collection has many cabinet cards which you may enjoy. For my eye, there are numerous cabinets similar to the n173s which are as attractive, and sometimes moreso.
