M101-6
These are likely miscatalogued under the M (periodical) category as a Sporting News set. They were advertised for sale directly from the publisher, Felix Mendelsohn, who was the creator of m101-4 and m101-5 as well. An ad for these first appears in the Sporting News on September 13, 1917. The ad boasts of 100 pictures, but a few more than that exist, as they were produced until at least early 1920 (evidenced by Babe Ruth being captioned with the Yankees). These photo cards are roughly 4 1/2" x 6 1/2", sepia, borderless and blank-backed. They may or may not include the publisher's initials "F.M.", and may have a slight stripe-like border on one edge or end. Here a couple of examples--more to follow:

Re: M101-6
Pete, I do not know of any distinction between the FM copyrights and those that lack it-just the three logical surmises for why: 1) he forgot to copyright some (perhaps earlier release), 2) he couldn't get the copyright in time or at all for some reason or 3) they were not his to copyright. I have not seen a specific card with each variation--they're either one or the other, there appear to be more copyrights than non, and neither commands any premium just for the copyright
Here is one I didn't post here before--I may not have owned it at the time:

Re: M101-6
Those are great images, really captures the type of person that played the game in those days. Once I get caught up I may have to buy a few of these.
