I think that it is clear that Mark McGwire is the first
slugger to achieve 70 HRs in a season. Similarly, Ruth was the first to achieve 30, 40, 50 and 60 HRs/Season. And back in the day .... Harry Stovey and Buck Ewing broke the rarified atmosphere of double digit HR production in the same year (1883) with stats of 10 + 14 for the NL and the AA.
But who was first to achieve 20 per season? There were four Chicagoans who hit that level in 1884. Do all share equal credit? Or does the one who chronologically first achieved
20th HR deserve specific recognition?
Be careful here ... you could be including a fellow with the period correct name of Abner Dalrymple, a place in (our recognition of) baseball history.
