Most significant hobby discovery in 2008?
In your opinion, what is the most significant hobby related discovery so far in 2008
Re: Most significant hobby discovery in 2008?
I discovered that we are in a recession and that I have to sell cards to make ends meet.

The Skydash Collection brought us a new Tin Top Thorpe among other great cards.

The Skydash find is a good call. Pretty incredible story behind that one too.
Might not be the most significant of 08, but for the t206 collectors on the board, how about the discovery of the second known Old Mill Double Factory Bar Overprint Back.

What did the Tin Top Thorpe and Jackson end up selling for?

Jay,
The Thorpe sold for $51,000 and the Jackson sold for $66,000...in a previous auction (Mastro's 2007 National Live Auction) a Jackson SGC 20 sold for $45,000. (All prices I think include the Juice!)
I think the Skydash collection sold for well under what the original estimates were; I think they were figuring that both the Thorpe and Jackson cards would sell for six figures (I think the entire collection went for around $130K - $140K). But not too bad for pulling them out of the trash.

Makes you wonder how well they would have done in REA. Even in this weak economy Rob managed to pull nice to huge numbers for all the keystone cards in his auction. Mastro can't say that.
I'd love to know what Mastro offered to land the collection. I'm guessing they were giving back a good chunk of the buyer's permium among other things.

Did he pull them out of the trash? I thought the Tin Tops belonged to the consignor's father in law. In any event, I understand the consignor was very disappointed with the results.

I don't know. When it comes to the true gems of the hobby, REA seems to get better results. With the next tier down it's about the same and Mastro seems to better on the stuff around $1-2k

They did belong to his father in law, but when he passed away someone threw all of them out. He later asked about the cards and fished them out. He also said there was another box of memorabilia, but they never found it.
If it's true, I'm not sure, but when Skydash originally posted that was his story.

Here's his actual story:
They came from his wife's grandfather's collection originally. The grandfather passed away in 1964.
"When he died, my father-in-law and mother-in-law drove to the funeral and arrived a day early. When he passed, he had four boxes. Two of the boxes contained the baseball cards and Tin Tops. The other two boxes contained memorabilia - unifomrs and signed baseballs, including a Babe Ruth game worn, signed jersey. But when my father-in-law arrived at the house, he was ging through his things and asked where his baseball cards were. They told him they were thrown away, that they were just trash. So he literally went to the trash dump and dug those things out, but he only found the cards. He didn't find the uniforms."
