Baseball Trivia Contest
He grew up not far from Chautauqua lake;
A fine strikeout pitcher this lad would make.
In fact he would set a world record one day;
Teams flocked to see him, they wanted him to play.
He was a World Series winner as a rook;
Or so it reads in my baseball book.
People wanted to know how a young man only twenty-three;
Could pitch with such poise and tenacity.
But soon after this young man became restless and weary;
He ended up on the shores of lake Erie.
When we talk blue here we’re not talkin Labatt;
We’re talking about a FL team with baseballs and caps.
Still in his twenties, his career it did end;
We do not know why and we won’t pretend.
Who am I?
One hint and one hint only - this player is relevant to Jay's collection in some way.
The person who answers correctly on their first guess (no google!) (baseball history book - ok!) receives the following e95 card from my collection:

The Answer
This baseball player was born in Gerry, NY just east of Lake Chautauqua in western New York. He set a record by striking out 42 batters in a 23-inning game against a semi-pro team from Corry, PA. He would later win Game 5 of the 1912 World Series for the Boston Red Sox. In that game, he defeated Christy Mathewson. After three years with the Red Sox, he jumped to the newly organized Federal League. He then signed with the fledgling Buffalo (Lake Erie) Blues. After that initial season with the Blues, he left baseball for good.
