T204's in REA
[my first post... easy on the newbie!]
All of the T204's in the latest REA came from a man in FL who contacted me via my website about 4 years ago. He didn't know anything about them and was trying to determine the values. When he told me he had a Johnson and a Burkett with a TTT back, I thought "paydirt!", but without scans, I could only give him (very) rough estimates. He then got skittish, even though I hadn't made an offer.
I put him in touch with Peter Thomas in Miami. Peter has the single best known T204 set, even better than Scott Brockelman's. Peter drove to his house, checked out the cards, and made him a tentative offer, but he wouldn't sell - nervousness, again. We both shrugged our shoulders at that and fell out of touch with the potential seller.
The guy got back in touch with me again this past winter. Turned out his house got obliterated by one of the many hurricanes FL experienced back in 2005 (or 2006? I forget) and he lost his computer, among other items. This time, I told him straight out to call Rob Lifson or Mastro and consign to them. He wrote back shortly afterwards to tell me that Rob held his hand through the process... now the cards are in the latest REA. I'd sigh loudly here, but I keep reminding myself that I only built my website for my own enjoyment. Also, the T204's are mostly in lower grades and I'm now only 7 away from finishing, so they wouldn't have helped me much (except for that Johnson!).
Price predictions: Johnson (SGC 40) - $10K. Burkett (SGC 40, TTT back) - $7K. Big group of 38 (lower grade) including Plank (SGC 30) - $7500. I'm going after the Eddie Collins (SGC 50), so the cheaper, the better.

Welcome aboard Bill. For those that don't know Bill, he is far from a n00b and one of the collectors from the original Full Count board. We'll be embarassing him with the Retired Mod title soon.

Hardly a newbie! Great to see you here Bill. A warm welcome to our second "retired mod".
Glad to hear the Ramlys survived the FL hurricanes. A T204 Burkett w/TTT back is a type of card. Surprised that a non-TTT backed Johnson in the same grade would outsell it. Your Ramly price predictions sound pretty spot on to me though (no surprises there).

Thanks, Gary, Jay and Ben. I like the forum... lots of features that N54 doesn't provide and the content isn't bad, either...
I think the Johnson goes higher. Burkett is going to be hard to swallow above $7K or so. I have one (SGC 40) with the usual Ramly back - got it from Mastro about 3 yrs ago. He gets a dumb (imho) premium because there were so few cards of him: HOFer collectors drive up the prices. My objection is similar to the one I have about getting reamed trying to buy Black Sox cards - they threw a WS, so I have to pay multiples? C'mon! Set collectors deserve more consideration...
"Retired mod"? Here's where I point out that Elliot is like the (much) older brother I never had.

Bill, You would have made Mark Turner really happy if the group had a Square Frame in it.

i'm glad your website keeps you amused, who has time to look at all those nice scans of common t222s? you should collect more sets with wagner and cobb in them, imo.

Who is this Wagner and Cobb you speak of? I consigned mine to REA cuz I thought they were common bums that would never be worth anything.

Bill C,
Good to see you posting here and thanks for sharing the story on the T204s with us.
I am glad for the consignor that the cards survived and it sounds as if they can use the cash considering what they went through with the hurricane(s) a few years back.
