Why I quit collecting by Kevin Saucier

Post by sabrjay on Sun Mar 11, 2012 12:38 pm

Kevin posted this on FB and said to go ahead and post it here:

"Why I stopped collecting pre-war baseball cards - as long as there is an original front "everything" else can be fabricated using original card-stock. Depending on the sophsitication, it now has about a 60% chance of getting past TPG. It requires a lot of skill, ordinary stuff found in most households and the ability to think way outside of the box."

I've known Kevin for a number of years now and when it comes to doctored cards he knows as much or more than anyone. At least he's not putting his creation up for sale.

Honestly, this is a significant reason why I have no interest in T206 back collecting.

This applies to most pre-war cards. As long as there is an an original front almost everything else can be made, even those wacky print errors. A wild example would be a green Uzit upside down back with a red cross overprint and a Cobb ghost image on front.

Even easier (but still tough to do)...a blank back.

Most pictures can be lifted off into a thin paper membrane that looks like this when completed:

The odds are so slim that a graded card would be rebacked... I don't think it's worth the worry. Certainly not worth quitting collecting over. I'm sure there's a few out there, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it's something that could bring down the hobby.

Interesting and here I thought you crawled back into a hole because you got caught bragging about making forgeries that you had placed into folks collections that you didn’t like.

I know I know I’m such a mean guy.

I guess I’m just one of those old fashioned guys that when a guy shows up and claims himself to be a hobby expert. Calls folks cards fake from internet scans, can’t tell a 150 from a 350 T206 Plank even when the slab says 1909 or 1910. Then goes and brags about criminal activities and card doctor jobs he’s pulled off to innocent collectors he hates with pride in private emails. All the while acting as the great white hope of a hobby and expecting TPG’s to get his expert opinion as a backup I just call BS.

But it’s most likely me like I said old fashioned, I’m sure everyone else is cool with it carry on.
