Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Chris - great pickup! Did Mile High explain how that card was available for sale? It looks like it sold at auction 2 months ago:
http://www.milehighcardco.com/LotDetail.aspx?lotid=17050
I'm wondering if there was some reserve that wasn't met.

I saw that when I was doing my research on the card and was a little nervous, because needless to say I'm into it for more than $2,000 and the juice. I didn't get the story because I'm a non-confrontational person, but I perked up within hours when I was offered $1,900 more than what I had into it so I feel great. Of course, that was after it was slipped into an SGC slab. An SGC 30 2 Good in that condition sold for $9,980 in the 2007 REA auction.
On a side note, to protect myself I took the PSA flip to their booth so they could remove it from their pop report (now only two graded PSA and eight graded SGC) and Joe Orlando came over. It was a bit awkward, but he still talked to me a bit and even signed my book.

Chris, incredible card! I am a Matty collector and that is one that I have wanted for a long time. I had no idea you could buy that card for under 5K.

Neither did the dealer who offered me over $5K before I left the building the last day. Centerpiece of my collection though. Can't let it go unless personal tragedy strikes in the future. God forbid.

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Here is probably my biggest pick-up ever. I have always wanted a Ruth auto ball, but I never pulled the trigger because there are so many fakes out there. Well, after looking at this ball for hours, and researching for days, I decided took go after it. The provenance is incredible with this ball. It came from a movie set that the babe was staring in called "The Babe Comes Home," almost all of the cast is on the ball and ruth's signature is very bold and beautiful.
This is, and will probably always will be, the cornerstone of my collection!
And, here is the link from the auction I bought it from if you want to read more about the ball and it's history:

Nice ball, Jeff. That Ruth sig is pretty darn clean.
My latest, on the other hand, has been around the block a few times. Rough-handled by some kid hopped up on one too many caramels, no doubt...but I'm still happy to have it.
Thanks to Brian T. on this one!

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Am I right that there aren't too many Flick cards out there in general? That would make that E107 Flick a good call.
I had been gunning for a babe Ruth ball at one point though that's def no longer a reality after my n173 binge. I think it's a great bold autograph with a good story.
Congrats to both of you!

E107 Flicks have a graded pop of 9 (SGC and PSA combined). Not impossible, but anything with a single digit pop is tough.
...besides, it's an E107 HOFer!

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
I think Jamie may have meant Flick cards from any prewar set....and yes, come to think of it, he doesn't have many beyond the T206 and E107. I can't think of any right now actually! Someone help me out?
As for as E107's go I'd say Flick is one of the easier HOFers in the set...but like Brian said...it's an E107 HOFer - all are tough/desirable! Congrats on the pickup.

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Without looking at pop reports to back it up, my own perception is that Flick and Plank are the two E107 HOFers seen most often. Does that seem about right to anyone else?
And yes, Flick does have very few cards relative to others...E107, T206, Colgan's, M116...also W600.

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Just another thought...would E107 be considered Flick's rookie card, or would it be W600 a year earlier? Are the cabinets considered 'cards' in that context?

Flick is in the Colgans chip sets (E254 and E270), has a couple postcards, and has a W600 Sporting Life Cabinet. He also has a Fan Craze playing card like most of the E107 players do. As far as straight cards (no cabinets, pogs, etc.), he does look to be pretty limited in appearance.
It is interesting because Flick was really a great player in his day. So much so that Cleveland was offered Ty Cobb in a straight trade for him and Cleveland turned it down! I think we can all agree that Cleveland lost out in that deal, but it bears testiment to how well respected he was at the time.

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
LOL Brian did you just call Colgans Chips "pogs"? Nice...
As far as the most common E107 HOFers....I'd probably put Waddell and Willis in that category along with Plank and Flick.

Re: August 2010 pick up thread
Flick, Plank, and Young are probably the three most "abundant" HOFers in the E107 set... if you consider a single digit pop to be abundant. Plank has a lot more visibility because one of his cards (an SGC 10) keeps getting tossed around various auction houses and put on eBay by the winner. I think that card has changed hands a half a dozen times in the past year and a half.
The E107 Flick is his rookie card. W600s were distributed between 1902 and 1911 and were piece-meal released. Flick's cabinet was not one of the ones that was available in 1902, so that makes the E107 his rookie (regardless of the card vs. cabinet debate for what constitutes a rookie "card").

Guilty. I tease my buddy who collects them about that too.

Waddell has a graded pop of 7 and Willis of 6. While we are at it, Joss has a pop of 7 and Chesbro has 8. These things are so common that I can't imagine anybody would want them. They should just send them all to me and I will properly dispose of them.

Brian -
I think you mentioned that there are 4 near sets of e107s. Are any of these sets graded?

Ben, you're right, I did mean the amount of different issues overall for Flick, but a pop 9, yes, is really low as well. A desirable card for sure.

I was about to say the same thing. I'm no grading expert but it looks at least a four to me. Lajoie is very underrated, most experts I believe rank him just below Cobb as a player.
