Have willards V100, V122 and V137 sets for sale
Maybe I made a mistake, maybe I didn't. Should I grade
them? yes, but I am too nervous to mail them away. My
mistake was to turn down an offer of 13,ooo USD's for
all three sets, not complete but mostly. Plus a pile of other
cards I have. I was willed a set of cards that need to be
owned by a collector. I find them so cool and I have spent
a couple years on and off trying to nail down a value. Value
seems to be based on grade. It was fun going thru each name
and I learned a lot about them. Maybe the 3 sets are only worth
that much but I couldn't make a deal including everything, lock stock
and barrel, the guy wanted every card I had for that offer.
In the end he still offered me $1,ooo each for 2 old Owen Sound
Grey's hockey cards, from the same era, one was Buck Moore
and the other was Hedley Smith. What made me wonder was
why an American was willing to buy these two cards from
a little town hockey team like Owen Sound. Not much info
on these two guy's, more like no info where I looked. Anyway
I again maybe had the offer of a lifetime on these two cards.
I can still go back to Brian and he'll take them off my hands
for $2,ooo.
I have, around 150 baseball (V100 I think), 50 boxing (V137), 50 asst'd
Sport (V122) and movie stars, a complete 96 card set by Willards too.
Plus a whole bunch of Boxing coloured cards. I have no reason
to believe that non of the cards were printed after 1924 and
many of the others are pre-1920ish assort'd sport. No Honus Wagners
in the mix.
Looking to sell or looking for someone to sell at 10% commision.
Thanks for listening

thanks for posting those.
Collins and Schmidt, I forget what is on the back's. I can go to bank and look
in the next day or 2 for sure.
Those 2 cards got me wondering....the Owen Sound Greys
hockey ones. They look like nothings. What did these two
hockey players do that made Brian offer me 1ooo dollars each for?
Or are there just some collectors that need a stop
at "Baseball Cards Anonymous" meeting now and then.
They may be the first two I need to grade. Next stop the
Hockey Hall of Fame I rekon. Do I have to send to USA
or can I have them graded in Toronto maybe? It's just
over 1 hour from home.
My dad grew up in Owen Sound but he wasn't born til '35. These were his
dad's cards. And they are cursed I'm tellin' ya. LOL
I could bore you with why I say they're cursed, but only if you ask.

REA is a reference to the auction house Robert Edward Auctions. If you are looking to sell, this is something that would be very well with them. The owner, Rob Lifson, should also be able to give a decent idea on a rough estimate of value. It's worth looking into if you are serious about selling.

He will take the cards ungraded. Depending on what he thinks is best for the sale, he work out something with you as far as grading. He's not too far from SGC, so getting them graded isn't an issue. Most likely, he would get the Cobb and any other big ticket cards graded. Given the condition, getting them slabbed isn't going to make a whole lot of difference in value. If there are just a few cards that need to be graded, he most likely offer to pay for that himself.

Re: Have willards V100, V122 and V137 sets for sale
If the $2000 offer for the pair of hockey cards is still on the table, I'd take it. Consigning the rest to an auction house is another good idea, and REA would be an excellent choice. Rob Lifson is as trustworthy as anyone in the hobby, and will handle your collection professionally and courteously. You've got some really nice cards in there, some big name players too. The V122 Cobb is the highlight of the lot, at least to me. You'll want to get a chunk of those cards graded, and as Jay mentioned, REA will save you the trouble and handle that for you (the time it takes to get stuff SGC graded from Canada can be excessive).
PS. Why do you say they're cursed?

Since you asked, or I prompt'd you to....I'll keep it short as possible:
They appear to create hard feelings between
family. Seems dad's older brother figured they shoulda been his cards.....and my eldest
bro figured they should be his.....and here we are. My Grampa
left the cards to my dad as he was the only athlete in the family.
Dad played for the Owen Sound Greys Ball team back in the
fifties. My Grampa owned the cards and he died very
young, 51 years old heart attack. My Dad, the second owner and his brother never really talked after dad got
the cards left to him, I don't know any details but the cards were the root
of the problem. My dad too died at a very young age, his life was over
at 60 but he hung in til 64 when he finally passed on. He also suffered a heart attack
he was 55. 5 years later
I said to mom I should get the cards dad left me and get them
in my safe deposit box. Mom had moved in with my oldest brother and
she said the cards were safe and sound in Jim's safe, in his house. I
felt very uncomfortable and asked mom if it was ok if I came
over and got them and put them in my bank. She was good with my
idea so off I went. My brother was caught off guard and seemed
really p'd that I came to collect what was mine. He handed them over to
me and that was it, all I ever got from that point was a cold shoulder.
I asked mom a couple years later why Jim seemed so cold, was it
the cards? She never could answer me, but she knew Jim was snubbing
me. I offered mom to take em all back, get them sold and split the
money 5 ways. She would have nothing to do with it, they are your
cards to do with what you want. Now I have had a close call already
too back a few years, right when the cards became mine I had a
heart attack too. Coincidence? Mine was from a drug called VIOXX
which I was on for arthritis my doctor figured, so I am involved in
a class action suite against that Merck Company right now. I figure
if I can sell the cards I'll break the "curse", and I'll be buying myself a
small toy ie: a 1962 chevrolet Pick up truck with the proceeds. This
I can leave to my son and he has no older brother to fight over it
with. I am not really superstitious, I just want to sell the cards and
get them off my mind as I am not really the one who can enjoy
them like they should be. It seems funny how greed and these
cards go hand in hand. Funny part is my one sister and her husband
also claim to have a stake in them too which could turn real
nasty when mom passes on, if your family can't screw ya, someone will.

Re: Have willards V100, V122 and V137 sets for sale
Seems that Hedley Smith was just a 16 yr old kid that
got on the team and played a heck of a series for Owen
Sound and helped them win the Memorial Cup in 24. He
again won in 27 making him the first player ever to be
on 2 Memorial Cups. He didn't go onto the big league
for what ever reason, I think he went to Business School
instead. My dad was a heck of a ball player too. He
had over a 400 average and was invited to the Toronto
Maple Leafs baseball camp. But he was in love and already
started an apprenticeship at Richardson, Bond and Wright
a re-known printer in Canada at the time.
That dude I had the offer from has
something to do with an Auction House in USA too, I'm
thinking Becketts. He was a heck of a nice guy and
but he was the first solid offer I had so far in my
few months I have been at this, so that is why I passed.
I sent the Willard V122 scans to "Dean" at the Auction house
today, we'll wait and see whats next

Keep us posted. We'll be able to help you through the minefield of auction houses. As Ben mentioned, the Cobb is the highlight. If/when word spreads of these cards, you'll get a few more auction houses trying to get you to consign the cards to them.

that sounds promising Jay, thank you guy's for your help. Sounds like I got
some real rare ones here. I'd like to find them a deserving home and of
course make a few bucks for myself. When I hear back from Dean I'll let
you guy's know what I am up to. I think I'll just send one set, then see
what happens and how I feel. Brian offered me $3,ooo dollars for the V122 set.
I was really hoping I'd get a bit more than that as I set my sights a little
higher than I should have.
The worst part for me is the shipping, It'll kill me sending them away, maybe
never to be seen again. Which isn't so bad as long as I get paid in the end
a fair price. I rekon I can set a value and buy insurance on them when I
ship? The Auction House will give me some good instructions on
how to ship.

Nothing to do with what those players did, they're desirable because of the rarity of those sets. I'm curious to find out what they are, will do some digging.

thanks Fisherboy. These cards are definately in the wrong hands, but
at least they are in my hands.
I sent those two images to REA as well
as my V122 set. Is REA just baseball
or can they sell hockey as well?

REA handles anything sports related and even nonsports stuff. It doesn't get much better than REA in this business. They are the only auction house I've ever consigned cards to.

I agree - they are top of the heap! (There are other good ones, but I would go with REA too.)

Re: Have willards V100, V122 and V137 sets for sale
just my good old "Kanuk Luck eh!, Sacre Blue"!!
Robert got back to me but.....
he has a near set just like mine in the next Auction already. In True
Business Fashion he passed for now and offered me up another
Auction house. said it wouldn't be in anyones B.I. to try and sell
2 of the same sets in the same condition in the same Auction.
But I'd like to watch this Auction. Does he have one auction a year or
is there a couple more? Said I could wait, which I may and I
sent him a couple scans from the V100 set, Hornsby, Cobb
and my cut Ruth. We'll see what he thinks of those and go from
there. He did say I had a "Very Rare" set which encourages
me in the financial side.

Re: Have willards V100, V122 and V137 sets for sale
Yeah, it wouldn't make sense at all to put two of the same sets in the same auction. REA has one auction per year only.
Another option if you want a faster turnaround is to consign the cards to a reputable ebay seller. Our forum members can recommend some good ones. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend "davidbvintage" and "just_collect" but there are many more. You could work something out with them with regards to grading as well.

B&L Auctions is the place Robert Suggested to me.
He said they could do the cards some justice.
When is the REA Auction? I'd like to watch the
set he is already selling

REA's auction is on April. Check out Barry Sloate. He runs a nice auction and is also great to deal with.

Barry is great, but I don't think he's doing any more auctions. The last time I talked to him he said that he wasn't going to be putting any more auctions together.

Huggins and Scott also put together nice auctions. They have at least a couple a year. They are great to work with and they treat their consignors very well.
Here's their website. They currently have an auction going, but will have another in a few months.
