What are the odds that the Henry Johnson stamp on the back of this card was stamped at a much later date, say the 1970s? Do you think that possibility hurts the card compared to like cards with preprinted backs. Does anybody have an idea of this cards value in say an SGC 20 holder? $200-300? Thanks in advance, Pete

I think it's far more likely the Henry Johnson stamp is period than not. I'm not sure what motivation there would have been in the 70's to stamp the backs of a bunch of 50 year old cards. I guess someone today could probably pull it off, but I highly doubt it in this case. I think $2-300 is a reasonable expectation for the Johnson. Some collectors would put a premium on the back stamp but not an absurdly high premium like you'd see with the e94 overprints.
I'm almost certain I owned that exact card maybe 5 years ago actually. If you don't mind my asking, when did you acquire the card Pete?

Thanks Ben. I got it from someone who got it from Andy Cook, who I'm sure you've done trades with in the past. The card looks an awful lot better in hand than in the scan.

Now it's coming back to me. I definitely traded that Johnson to Andy. One of our many trades. He's a great guy to deal with and he's got quite a collection too. Nice to see the card traded and enjoyed by several collectors in our community.
I believe someone is working on an all-Henry Johnson back stamp w575 set. I forget who it is - maybe you've been in contact with him already and if not, maybe he'll see this thread.

Determining whether the ink used for the stamping was manufactured pre-war or not would follow the same technique as checking the dot matrix on the card. However, that does not prove when it was stamped (unless the ink is of post war manufacture). Right?

Al Crisafulli is working on the set and has Cobb and Ruth amongst many commons; i'm not sure if he has Johnson yet. If he is lacking Walter Johnson, i'm sure he would be interested in obtaining your card and giving it a good home.
