Free e-book: "Base-Ball" by John Ward (1888)
If you're looking to learn more about the intricacies of baseball in the 19th century, "Base-Ball: How to Become a Player" by John Montgomery Ward is a recommended read. Ward was an extremely intelligent man - had a Columbia law degree, and was only 28 when this book was published. Ward had a profound influence on baseball history with his fight against the Reserve Clause and creation of the Players League in 1890.
He goes into great historical detail and there are a lot of interesting strategies and tips throughout. The book was not copyrighted, so it can be freely distributed. I've uploaded the e-book PDF so feel free to download it and enjoy the read!
*You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to open the file. Chapter 1 begins on pg 17 of the PDF.
