I sold a few cards hoping to land one of the Nagurski. Sadly, it's seems lot of other small budget collectors had the same idea. The low grade cards went for way more than what I thought they would while the PSA3 and higher cards seemed to steals. Wish I had the money to chase those instead. Oh well. Guess I'll pump the money into the BBQ sauce business since there is nothing REA I want.

I'm sorry to hear that Jay.

As several hypothesized, the hobby was able to absorb these cards.  What was the range they were selling for (the site requires registration to see the final bids)?

They sold for $1600-6000. The PSA1s went for $1600-1900. PSA1(MK) $1800 The 1.5 went for $2800. This card looked much better than its assigned grade. The 2s went from $2300-3000. PSA3 $3300. PSA4.5 $5250 PSA5 $6000. all with no BP.

The PSA1(mk) was the worst of the group but one of the last to sell. I think at that point. Anyone that had enough money that had not already won one was going to pay whatever they had left to win it. THey sold the PSA5 first which might have been a mistake. The first PSA1 and 2 went the cheapest. I was the $1500 bid on the $1600 PSA1. Didn't have anyone more money yo push it another increment. Guess I should sacrificed another member of the Gang of 10.

Coming up short is always a lousy feeling.  I think they made a mistake by selling them all in one auction.  Space them out over several months to allow the bankroll of the potential buyers to replenish.

I'm going to have to do some reading on this card.  I know about it tangentially, but I'd be interested in a detailed write-up about it.

My football collection consists of a sole 1989 Score Barry Sanders card.  I was thinking about picking up all the cards of my fellow alum Joe Hamilton.  I wouldn't mind having a nice, midgrade Jim Brown card as well.

It was a live auction that start at 2pm CST on a Wednesday. WTF? How many people are ale to actually be available to bid, live, on that day and time? Sure, you place your max bid online before the auction, but the way you bid live and placig a max bid before hand is totally different. To make matters worse, the first lot was the highest grade example. If I was the consignor I would not be happy about this.

AS long as I've been in the hobby (over 30 years) the Nagurski has always been the holy grail for football collectors. It has almost everything you want in a holy grail, tier 1 HOFer, classic set and just rare enough that it's not impossible to find but you don't see it for sale often either. The only thing it's missing is the folk lore like the Wagner has.

The 48 Bowman Mikan is exactly like Nagurski. Tier 1 HOFer whose rookie card is a tough to find high number.

Kind of interesting that 2 of the 4 holy grail cards are of Minnesota players Shocked

I really enjoyed my conversations with the consignor of this auction. The original owner, Jim Heaney, led an interesting life that included flipping works by Picasso, competing with the 1952 Olympic team, and being friends with the family of Grace Kelly. Turns out they were from the same Philadelphia suburb as my cousin and her father's family. Small world.

it's already at 5.3k, i bet somehow it'll end up at least at the same sales point plus all the associated consignment fees.

If you or I put that card up for auction it would struggle to get bids until the last day. These seem to always have at least 2 bidders that will run a up card to market value within a day or two of the auction going live. Just amazing. Of course eBay doesn't care because it means more fees for them.
