Does anyone recognize this 19th Century Chicago player?
I have been trying to ID the player on this cabinet without any luck. Does anyone know the name of this player? Thanks

Could be Cap Anson, Buck Ewing or Chief Sockalexis

You could go to baseball-reference.com and start viewing the individual players from the Chicago teams to see if you can get a match.

I know it's a long-shot, but was thinking someone might run across this thread and recognize the player. I have looked through the Chicago rosters without any luck. I posted on another/the other board and got some feedback about the timeline of this uniform, possibly 1888-1890, maybe into early 1890's. I did not see any n172 matches for this player and the general consensus was that this was an obscure or not very well known player.

Looks a little like the blurry picture they have on baseballreference.com for Dad Lytle, who played exactly one game for the Chicago Colts in 1890.

Dad Lytle
Thanks for the help. Yeah, I agree that he looks somewhat like Dad Lytle. On the memorabilia board I had pitched the possibility that this could be Ossie France or Dad Lytle. One of the SABR photo guys thought that with the images that exist for those guys, an ID was inconclusive. I think there is a good chance that this cabinet photo is of a member of the 1890 Chicago Colts. Most of the roster has players that have several known images to compare, and can be ruled out. There are players from the team like Robert Gibson, who I can't find a photo for. In a search, scores of pages of Bob Gibson show up instead.
In any event, I've learned a lot about the Chicago rosters of the late 1880's to early 1890's from this search. For example, Dad "Pop" Lytle had over 3000 minor league AB with a career avg. of .294. In his one game with Chicago, baseball-reference states that he had 4 PA, 4 AB, 0 Hits, 0 Walks, and 1 Run. I guess he reached first on a passed ball strikeout..

It looks like Dad Lytle to me. Interesting card then for such an obscure player.

If it is Lytle, It's really neat that you have a cabinet of a guy that only played in one game for Chicago.

I can certainly picture a scenario where Lytle would be quite proud of earning that Chicago uniform and head right down to the studio to get his picture taken. It was a big to do in the era.
