On a slightly unrelated note...why is the 51 bowman Mays more accepted as his true rookie...than the 52 topps mays...yet mantle is the opposite?

I don't consider the 52 Topps Mantle his rookie because it isn't. The reason it gets so much press is because it is much harder to find than a 51 Bowman and it looks much better and sells for a whole lot more.

The 1952 Topps is neither Mays' rookie, nor Mantle's. Mantle's gets more attention because it is a high number in the set, and thus tougher than the Mays - for example. The 51 Bowman is the rookie card.

the 52 topps mantle is a high number...I am aware of that...wasn't it a doubleprint within the high #'s? Is it really that much/if any tougher than the 51 bowman?

It was a double print, but with the 311 card number, it is supposedly "less common". (I won't use the term scarce, because... well, it's not.)
