Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
Hey guys, I'm strongly considering picking up an Ipad 2 while I'm back in Canada for the summer. Do any of you own one? Does anyone have a strong argument for/against owning one? Trying to decide if it's worth it for me, they do seem a tad pricey but also very cool. Would probably opt for the 32 GB version minus the 3G service, and bring it to work with me every day for convenience sake (leaving my macbook pro as my home computer).
Appreciate your feedback

imo the ipad is limited and overpriced...however it's simple and convenient for most people if you're just doing the typical email/light web browse and nothing taxing. it looks great and has a long battery life. another plus is you having a macbook already so you can around some of the limitations and get the max out of it.
i'm firmly on team android...lots of apps and developers, don't have to be bound to apple....but might be a new platform if you haven't used it.
i have been looking at the asus transformer...costs about half of the ipad2 and runs 2x faster. admittedly the build is not as good as the ipad2, but it's still very good. you do get at least 7-8hrs of batt life, and you can plug it into a keyboard and it turns into a netbook

Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
Mona got an iPad from work to use. So far, just about the only thing we use it for is when I am using an online recipe to cook something. Saves having to print it out. Otherwise, about the only other time it gets used is if we have shut the computer down for the night and need to see something online.
We are dumping the fancy phones too and back to just basic cell phone, maybe even a getting rid of them altogether and going back to a land line. We really don't have a real need for a cell phone beyond the occasional convenience factor.

I have to respectively disagree with Quan...I have an ipad 1 and got it for free. It all depends on what you will be using it for. It's light, works with wifi perfect so get a limited data plan if you get the 3G service and have access to wifi most of the day.
Android can not compare to apple products, they are 2-3 years behind and are playing catch up. Viruses are starting to appear with android. As for being stuck with apple, I have had no problem owning an iPhone 4 and iPad. PC's will go the way of VCR tapes and tablets will rule. I do wish they had USB ports but I am sure it will come in time. I say buy it if you have a Mac book.

yea i did get rid of my iphone for an android phone. another thing i couldn't get used to was you have to pay for all the apps on iphone (and it's a very limited selection)...unless you jailbreak the thing.
i bought a dell streak 7 dirt cheap to see what all this tablet fuss is about..tbh i'm not that impressed. found it kinda slow (and it has a fast cpu compared to the ipad and galaxy samsung tab etc) and unresponsive at times. like jay i prefer my 13.3 notebook most of the time. tablet is mainly for my infant son to play with or my wife to chat with friends/family.
jay...you can get an app that allows you to make wifi calls, so you probably should get rid of your cell if you don't use it that much.

also with everything factored in...price is a HUGE deciding factor. ipad2 is $700-$800? the transformer is $400 or less. the technology just isn't there for you to spend over $500 for a tablet, even if it's hella convenient.
ben i know time is a factor for you since you'll probably be away by then again...but in the fall brand new 3.0 android tablets will be coming to the market with alot of new tech (we're currently on the 2.2 platform)...or just wait until the ipad2 refurbs cost less

It's a toy but if you want one, it's your life to lead. Totally agree with not getting 3G, that is a money pit. Like Quan I switched from iphone to droid (Captivate). I scoff at iphone users now How was it that I once was one?
Ipad makes sense if u already have a macbook. Yet samsung's tab is smaller. I say go ipad bc u have ur heart set on it. Enjoy!

Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
just so happen my dad's wife bought a new ipad 2 today...32gb no 3g for $599 plus tax.
got to play with it for about 10min. the thing is super slim. i'm very impressed with its form and size. screen is nice, all the features of an iphone. if an iphone was that thin i'd switch back!

Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
I love my iphone...and my macbook...and I was considering an ipad as a lightweight computer to travel with that I can upload photos to as I go...use as a reader, etc. I don't get all u apple haters out there...the products are designed extremely well...and they actually work!!!! I say buy the ipad...u won't regret it!

no one's bashing apple pete...just trying to help ben make the best decision for his situation.
i'd say the ipad is perfect for the everyday people out there (about 85-90% of the pop).

Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
Thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated. Probably gonna buy one this week - for someone who travels alot, it makes plenty of sense for me. The touch typing is the only thing that could become an annoyance, but otherwise it sounds like a great gadget to have.
Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
I think you can plug in a keyboard via USB when you're at home.

Well i took the plunge and ordered the 32gb from the apple store. It arrived today - very cool toy! The touch typing is gonna take some getting used to though (I'm typing this msg on it now)
One of the best things about it that I've discovered so far are all the apps available. I've downloaded a bunch of free ones already and they're great!

Paying for all of the apps?
Very limited selection?
There are a ton of free, useful, apps in the iTunes store, and regarding limited selection, there are around 450k apps, versus around 200k on the Android Market.
Re: Thinking about picking up an IPad 2...
congrats Ben...I think you 2 will be very happy together.

I sold my dell streak 7 and got in on the hp touchpad deal...did some mods and overclocked it...it's not an ipad2 but I'm liking it so far.
