Re: New Wagner find
I know the article mentioned that SGC looked at the card, and that Heritage will be auctioning it off, but why does it look fake to me? I know it has brown ink for the name (not black) but somehow it just doesn't look "right", maybe it's just the poor quality of the photo.

Re: New Wagner find
From reading discussions about the card elsewhere, it seems it has been shellacked. Probably why it looks so funky.

Re: New Wagner find
Unless I am mis-reading a couple of statements it sounds as if ALL the cards have had their borders cut off though. Definitely too bad about that.

What's the over/under on the amount of time before a feeBay scammer says he found a Wagner in a safe in secret space of his grandpa's closet?

Re: New Wagner find
I concur with the group about how the Wagner looks.....odd is the right word.
Wish the article would have given some more detail about the E107's! I'm probably breaking some unwritten vintage collector code by saying this, but Wagner bores me. Still kinda cool that t206 Wagners are still being found though I guess. If this one is not a fake, it would have to be among the ugliest t206 Wagners out there (I heard of one that was torn in half).

Re: New Wagner find
The article mentions that the T206 wagner card is the second most valuable card of all time. Whats the #1 most valuable?

Re: New Wagner find
I'm not aware of a card that is more valuable than the T206 Wagner... at least the one that sold for $2.8 million. That said, if I had a T206 Wagner, I would sell it and buy lots of other pre-war vintage cards.
Ben, you mentioned that Wagner bores you. Is it just the T206 Wagner or all Wagners in general?

Re: New Wagner find
Just the T206. If value wasn't part of the equation, there are many other scarcer/more attractive Wagners out there that I'd rather have. But I understand why the T206 Wagner has a certain magnetism that comes from being the single most iconic card in the hobby.
To answer nbv4 - the Wagner is the #1 most expensive card in the hobby. Not sure what the article was referring to. Welcome to the board by the way!

Re: New Wagner find
I'm with Ben. I'm bored with the t206 Wagner. It's not that rare and not that good looking. By today's collecting standards there are more important and rarer cards, but the card is a hobby legend and always will be. The average person would be impressed if you owned one, but me and many other advanced collectors would say "That's cool" but wouldn't really be impressed.
Off the top of my head, cards that would impress me would be the OJ Anson in uniform, e107 Wagner or Matty, e270 Thorpe and not a card, the Cameo Pepsin pin (I think this is the right set) of Lou Sockalexis.

Re: New Wagner find
I'm with you guys. The T206 Wagner isn't impressive to me. For my dollars, I'd much rather have his E107 rookie which is probably 8x more scarce than the T206. I still don't understand why the E107 Wagner with a likely single digit population (graded and raw) is worth so much less than the T206 with its 60+ known examples.

You guys are too cool for me! The t206 wags will always be the holy grail to me...and I'm always more than happy to see newly discovered examples...despite the fact it isn't so rare!

Re: New Wagner find
Oh hell yes, E107 Wagner over the T206 any day of the week. Some may say the E107 is even more drab looking, but to me, all E107's have an appealing look to them. Even Wagner with his awkward hairdo
Re: New Wagner find
I am not 100% sure but I think the article meant to say it's the #2 most desired card after a 1952 topps Mantle rookie. I remember years ago someone doing a survey as to what card most collectors desire to own and mantle was 1st and waggy was 2nd.

Beautiful card. Now if I could just find one that nice in my price range, I'd be all set.

Re: New Wagner find
Does anyone think the price gap between the T206 and E107 Wagner slowly closes in future years? Personally I think it will, but they'll never be equal. Just a hunch.
Re: New Wagner find
My hope is that the gap does close substantially. I agree that they will never be equal, though. There is too much notoriety associated with the T206 for them to ever actually be equal.

ben...i agree. I'm sure someday some big old sperm whale...or maybe a whale shark will pony up record dollars for an e107 wags.

Re: New Wagner find
Anyone know if the SGC 40 is the highest graded E107 Wags?
Small scan I know, it's the only one I could find. Might be the same card as the raw one I posted earlier.
