Favorite Players to Collect
2 Part Question:
Who are your favorite players to collect?
AND, if you could pick only one card of each of those players for your collection, which would it be and why?
_______________________________________________________
A few of mine:
Eddie Plank (E107 - just love the portrait, always been drawn to Plank's cards).
Mordecai Brown (Plow Boy Cabinet - ultra cool looking horizontal pose)
Willie Keeler (E97 Briggs - nice sweater and yellow background)
King Kelly (N162 - beautiful color and dramatic clouds in the background)
Connie Mack (Texas Tommy - once owned a trimmed example - great close up portrait shot, also a neat writeup on the back)
Harry Wright (Kalamazoo Bats w/ad back - terrific pose of the great old manager in the dugout)

Kind of cliche with my first choice, but:
1) Cobb (I think that most of his cards are aesthetically pleasing).
2) Detroit players....because I'm a Tigers fan
3) Always been a fan of Sherry Magee cards.
4) Shag Shaughnessy
5) Nap Lajoie

1) Cobb: I'd take a T216 Cobb (Standing) with a MINO back
2) Detroit players.....see above
3) Magee: I'd want the T206 error Magie card or an E92 Red Croft's Candy Magee (if it exists)
4) Shaughnessy: I'd want an E222 AWH Caramels back Shag
5) Nap Lajoie: I'd want an E107

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
Forgot about the why:
T216 MINO Cobb standing)....because it is my holy grail for T216's.
T206 Magie error....because it's one of the toughies from the set. Most people work to 520 for the set and skip the Magie. Magie is the most realistically attainable of the big 4.
E222 Shag......because it's a sweet looking card using the same image as the T206, and it's super rare.
E107 Lajoie.....I just love the black and white photo. It's a great image.

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
cool thread. i'm gonna go with my favs and the most realistic card i could obtain of him...i.e. not gonna go wagner & t206
1. ed delahanty--OJ, rookie young early photo
2. nap lajoie-- w600 street clothes, scarce and with cabinet you get more cardboard for the money
3. ed plank--t206, yea cuz it's a t206 plank
4. joe jackson--cracker jack, classic colorful handsome pose from a classic americana set
5. ted williams--'39 playball, rookie card
honorable mentions: cy young (e107), walter johnson (t204), speaker (e90-1)
just realized i don't even have cobb or wagner ...
ok cobb: w600, tough and cool rookie card
wagner--e104 nadja back, it's a caramel and a wagner portrait and a tough back

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
1. Ed Delahanty (Duke Cabinet because it's just stunning)
2. Tris Speaker (Fellow Texan, Great Player) Horner Cabinet Captures a youthfull Spoke that makes my hair stand on end, Second choice would be Novelty Cutlery Postcard
3. Nap Lajoie (T206 w/ Bat, hard to beat)
4. Christy Mathewson (1914 Cracker Jack or Boston Garter) would be estatic with either
5. Walter Johnson (T204 Rookie, Just because I like it)

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
I just do sets now but when I wasn't focused in the 80s I had a lot of Sam Crawford cards. I liked him because he was the career leader in triples. My favorite piece wasn't even a card. I had a news service photo of him from the turn of the century.
The only other players I looked for specifically were Jerry Koosman and Tony Oliva.

Speaker is #1 on my list, for sure. He has so many great cards, doesn't he? I think the most beautiful just might be the T3 (I don't own yet). But the CJ is a true classic. The T207 is really cool. The E90-1 is beautiful...why choose just one?

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
I forgot Big Ed. I had a few of his cards but they were always tough to come by.
Re: Favorite Players to Collect
I don't know as much about cards as some folks on this board, but here are my favorites:
N172's - Delahanty or Anson
Wagner - I like the D304 best of his portraits (other than t206), plus I like the batting of the E90's and E95's.
Cobb - Bat off Shoulder, and if I could afford it, Cobb/Cobb
Eddie Plank
1895 Mayo - I'd love a Nichols or Rusie, especially a Nichols

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
When I lived in Sacramento I was set up at a show and lady brought in a cabinet photo of Nichols in his Omaha uniform. On the back was a love letter written to her great grandmother and obviously signed by Nichols.
This was around 1992 and I offered her $500 for it and she turned it down. I would have loved to have gotten the piece but I totally understood why she didn't want to sell.

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
Yeah, that Nichols is diesel, I think the n300's are pricey but great cards. Nichols imo was the second best pitcher in the 1890's, perhaps the entire 19th Century, to Cy Young. Did you see what his OJ went for in REA? 15k - It blew away estimates... I think he's a hot player right now.

Re: Favorite Players to Collect
Clarkson was by far the best pitcher of the 19c. Young spent half his career in each century so it's tough to say he was the best in either.

Nice unique choice Eric. Here are a few scans of the E222 Shag. Anyone know if each of the E222 subjects come in all color varieties (blue, grey, red, orange, green, etc)?
Here's a LINK to our E222 thread in our virtual sets area where you can see a bunch of different color varieties on display.
