T206 Oddiest Inclusions and Deletions Empty T206 Oddiest Inclusions and Deletions

Post by bowlingshoeguy Fri Mar 26, 2010 4:11 pm

I think we all know that the T207 set has an odd selection of players but the T206 set has some of it's own.

My strangest inclusion is Arlie Latham who had like 4 ABs and was 48yrs old when the card was printed.

Biggest deletion: Jack Coombs, one of the better pitchers of the time frame.

The Monster also missed a couple hot Red Sox prospects named Harry Hooper and Joe Wood!

Both those players had a good chance to be included. My understanding is that there was about a year lag on player choices, so anyone that started in 1910 had a good chance of not being included.

I kind wish Connie Mack was included in the Monster. Why not? He shows up in a bunch of the E sets. Would have been a cool card. Not sure if it's really an omission though because, if I'm not mistaken, there are no other manager cards in the set (other than player managers)

John McGraw and Hugh Duffy, but I think none other. How many years had Mack manged by that time?

Interesting - and I have not really thought about whether those two were still playing - but there is a McGraw with a fielder's glove on and Duffy's pose is batting...

Mack began managing full time in 1897 for Milwaukee. Moved over the the Phila Athletics in 1901.

I was incorrect about there being no full time managers in the t206 set .... Mcgraw and Duffy were managers only by the time their T206s came out (both of their playing careers ended in 1906). But as Blair pointed out, their T206 cards misleadingly show them in action poses.

Connie Mack managed the A's for 50 years. This isanother record that will never be broken. It also helped that Mack owned the team so he wasn't about to fire himself.

Lets take a different spin here. Why doesn't Honus Wagner have multiple pose cards in the T206 set such as Cobb, Bender, Chase, Lajoie, Chance, Tinker, etc. Could it be that some of those other player poses came after the fact of Wagner requesting his cards be removed??

Why was Shoeless Joe not in T206? Maybe I just missed something, but wasnt he around prior to their release? If not, Ive learned a little more about baseballs' history, and one of the all-time greats!

Strange omissions...
Babe Adams, Eddie Grant, Earl Moore, Jake Daubert, Jack Coombs, Joe Wood, Sam Leever, Jimmy Archer, King Cole (he was 20-4 in 1910), George Suggs, Slim Sallee, Jimmy Austin, Hippo Vaughn, Larry Gardner, Duffy Lewis, Harry Hooper, and Doc Gessler.

Strange additions...
-Rube Marquard being on 3 poses (he had a pretty crappy record until the 1911 season)
-Joe Doyle
-many of the Southern Leaguers were wierd choices, they could have made Joe Jackson! (there was nobody as famous as Joe in the South between 1908 and 1910!)

From my understanding the player selection was about a year behind and Joe Jackson's first full season was 1911, so that may explain his omission.

Of Yhett's list I always wondered about Babe Adams and Jack Coombs. Both had pretty solid careers at this point. I think there is still plenty we do not know about the T206 set.

I did forget 2 other managers, John McGraw and Hughie Jennings.
