e92 set
just a little advice. I have over 80% of a t206 set graded and its slowing down. I have a t201 set 100% graded and a w551 100% graded. I have a number of random sets started all low grade. about 12 T3's, 6 D304's and ten t205 hof's now the question is can a e92 set in lower grades be done reasonably or will the hof'ers kill me out the gate? I never tried an E set and the 92's look cool so any advise would be great thanks BOB

Are you going for a certain back or just the Dockman's?

Re: e92 set
e92, like t206s, is one of those weird sets where Burdick broke from his standard convention of cataloging sets. e92s are actually four different sets with very distinct checklists that shared much of the same players and poses just like t206s. The backs are Dockmans, Crofts, Crofts Cocoa and Nadja. Dockmans are by far the most plentiful.
The price issue is relative to what you feel comfortable with spending. Low grade, presentable examples of Cobb and Wagner will set you back about $1k or so. The Matty probably about $500.

Good news though! There's a PSA 6 E92 Wagner in an eBay store for just under $12,000! Should get you started.

You'll be pleased to hear that if you choose Dockmans reverse, there is no Cobb (Dockmans is only 40 cards). Also Dockmans has only one of the Chief Bender poses (the white hat w/ green background).
Now if you want to own a set with a Cobb, you would have to go with one of the other E92 backs.
Cheers,
Blair

Re: e92 set
Other notable cards that are not in the Dockman set (but are in other E92) are:
Eddie Collins
Bresnahan
Evers
and the famous Rebel Oakes card where he extends into the card border

Re: e92 set
I really like the E92 set, lots of interesting twists and turns in the set.
Here's how I collected the E92 set. Dockman's are the easiest, so it wasn't a tough (relative to other caramel sets) putting a complete set together in low grade. But I also wanted one card of each of the other images with E92 backs. It wouldn't be a complete master E92 set (or 4 complete sets if that's the way you'd like to see it), but it would be good enough for me.
Croft's Cocoa and Croft's Candy are 50-card sets (same checklist), 40 of the cards are the same as Dockman's. Croft's Candys come in three different back colors. Black (most common), Blue (tougher) and Red (real tough). So that's another interesting variety to the backs. The 10 additional ones are:
Barry, Bender Striped hat, Cobb, Collins, Evers, Jacklitsch, Knabe, Knight & Miller Fielding.
Of these 10, I was able to get 8. One of them (Knight) I found in a Nadja back. The other one I could not find an E92 back, but had to settle for E105 Mello Mint (Barry).
The Nadja back is the biggest set with 62 total cards. 50 of which are the same as the Croft's sets...and 12 are unique. Ironically I think the 12 unique ones are the easiest -- they are all St. Louis cards and I think there was a big find of these in the 80s, so they are much more plentiful. The other 50 - which can be found with the other backs - are much tougher with the Nadja back. As evidence, I was able to pick up each of the STL cards without much difficulty, but have found it next to impossible to pick up any other Nadja without spending a lot more than I wanted to. The aforementioned Oakes is a STL card in the Nadja back -- so that's good news.
When I first thought about collecting the set, I looked up Pete Calderon's site (which I don't think he has updated in a long time, but it is still very helpful). Here's his page on the E92s: http://www.caramel-cards.com/e92.html
Here's scans of my Dockman set: http://imageevent.com/kingyao/prewar/e92dockman
and non-Dockman E92 and E92-related cards: http://imageevent.com/kingyao/prewar/e92otherbacks

Re: e92 set
If my memory hasn't failed completely, I remember that until the huge find of St Louis players with Nadja backs, those particular cards were actually the toughest ones to find.

King,
Been meaning to comment on this - you are too modest! Your Dockman set is beautiful, and thanks for sharing the scans of your set. I was reviewing the SGC pop report, and your cards are definitely not "low grade" as far as that set goes. Most of yours would be well into the top half of what SGC has graded. (The Chase you have is stunning ).

Re: e92 set
How's the dockman set coming along so far Bob? Let me know which cards you have so far. I might be able to help you out a bit over the summer when I have access to my cards - I know I have a few extra mid grade e92's kicking around somewhere.

Hey Bob,
Looks like you got 30/40...me too! Only 10 left for me. A couple of those will cost me some $$$ though.

Re: e92 set
Nice progress Bob, I see a few HOFers tucked in there as well.
Every prewar collector should own a E92 Matty at some point (or that pose in another set). Hopefully you find a nice one for your set soon!
