N173 cabinet question Empty N173 cabinet question

Post by 3-2-count Mon Nov 30, 2009 3:28 pm

Does anyone know if N173 Goodwin cabinet's can be found with a blank caption on the bottom of the mount.
The ones i've seen always have some sort of print such as, Old Judge, Dogs Head, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Tony

N173 cabinet question Empty Re: N173 cabinet question

I've seen a good number of 19th century cabinets with generic mounts that share images with the N173 set. However, without the Goodwin/Dogs Head advertisement on the mount, they don't qualify as N173's. At least IMO. Can someone back me up on that?

Got a scan for reference Tony?

The ones without any type on the front usually are passed off as proofs or some other such thing to try and associate them with n173s. I'm with Ben though and don't believe they are n173, just a cabinet that happens to have a photo used by Goodwin/Old Judge

Ben,
Here you go...... Size looks to be 4-3/8 x 6-1/8. Sorry for the bad pics, they are from Ebay.
FYI, it's Kid Gleason.

I agree with Ben. Also, most of the "proofs" were the original photograph taken for the N173 set and contain the photographer's imprint on the mount as Goodwin used a variety of photographers, but all well-known.
From the pictures (although poor) it appears that it is a reprint.(something seems off) Possible that it could be a reprint done in the early 1900's from the glass negative, but I'm not sure if Gleason was one of the ones for which a glass negative was found.
No question that the image is one that would be used on N173's.

Yikes. If that's a reprint someone got hit. It ended at $1200+ on Ebay this afternoon.
The pictures are tough to make out it's true look. I thought It looked off as well.

I can't be sure, but I am suspicious. It's rare (but not impossible) to see it without a photographer's imprint. I would imagine the imprint is very hard to copy, so somebody made a copy of the photo and put it on a totally blank piece of cardboard. Also, a bit wary that the photograph has no nicks to it all, nor does the mount....again not impossible, just suspicious. I think $1200 is a pretty big price, but my guess is that Black Sox collectors got excited about seeing a Kid Gleason item and might not be familiar with cabinets. Hope, for whoever bought it, that it is legit.
